goodness preserve me from despair. Defend me from all the cares and pleasures of this life, which would make me forget that thou alone art worthy to be feared and loved; and give me grace so to order my conversation, that I may encourage others to live as becomes the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for whose sake I beg to be heard. Amen.

PRAYER FROM DR. PARKER.

Blessed be thy name, O Lord, that thou hast given me health and liberty to approach thy house this morning, to praise and pray unto thee, to confess my sins and iniquities before thee, to hear thy holy word read and preached, and to commemorate the atonement made for us by Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament which he himself ordained. The glad tidings of life and salvation have been proclaimed to me, and I have been invited to accept of eternal life and happiness. O Lord, incline my heart always to comply with

this offer of mercy; let thy Spirit of grace take possession of my soul, that the thoughts of my heart, and the words of my lips, may be acceptable unto thee. Sanctify unto me the word I have this day heard, and make it the seed of life unto my soul, that by thy blessing it may so grow and increase, that the temptations of the world may not prevail against it. Accept, I beseech thee, of my thanksgiving, for all thy mercies and blessings, from time to time, bestowed upon me, for my vocation, justification, and sanctification, and for the hope thou hast given me of a better life when this is ended. I thank thee, also, for all my temporal blessings, for the share of health and ease which I have enjoyed, for the use of my understanding and reason, and for all the kindness I receive from my friends, who are made the instruments of thy lovingkindness to me.

Be present with me, O Lord, the remainder of this day, that no unholy or unquiet thoughts may disturb that peace which the service of thy Church should

ever leave upon our hearts and minds. Pardon all my negligences and ignorances, and let them be hid from thy sight by the perfect and absolute obedience of thy dear Son, that those sacrifices which I have this day offered, may be accepted in, and for the sake of that Sacrifice which Jesus Christ offered upon the Cross for all penitent and returning sinners. And give me grace to walk according to all those holy rules which are prescribed in thy divine Word, till I attain to the end of my faith, the salvation of my soul in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYER FROM THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN.

O Lord my God, who, by thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, hast promised thy Holy Spirit to them who ask it of thee, I beseech thee to grant it to me in all the graces and assistances of which I stand in need. I ask it in all humility and earnestness, as the greatest blessing I can receive. I ask it in a sense of my own

weakness, as knowing that, without his continual inspiration, I can desire nothing that is good, or do any thing that is acceptable to thee. O, therefore, let it assist and support me in all trials when I most need its help. Let it be to me a spirit of sanctification to purify my corrupt nature-a spirit of counsel in all difficulties of discretion in all doubtsof courage in all dangers-of constancy in all persecutions of comfort in all troubles, especially in the hour of death -and of entire resignation to thy holy will and pleasure in all afflictions that are most grievous to me. Leave me not to my own human frailty, but let it constantly inspire me with fear, love, and devotion to thee; with truth, justice, and charity towards my neighbours, and with temperance and self-denial towards myself.

Furthermore, I beseech thee, let it be to me a spirit of patience under all crosses, and in all provocations; a spirit of truth, and stedfast repose of mind in thy care and providence; a spirit of for

giveness to my enemies ; a spirit of humility to myself, to make me meek and gentle to others, and to free me from all the sin and torment of envy and malice; and, finally, so let it guide and govern me through the whole course of my life here, that I may not fail to obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
