He poureth in, He filleth to the brim,

And He holdeth it forth.

Doubtless, they shall suck up its dregs,

All the wicked of the earth shall drink them.

9 But as for me, I will give praise continually—

I will hymn, unto the God of Jacob.

10 For I shall break in pieces all the horns of the wicked; The horns of the righteous shall be exalted!

PSALM LXXVI.

1 GOD is made known in Judah, In Israel great is His Name;

2 At Salem is His tabernacle,

And His dwelling-place in Sion.

3 There hath He broken the arrows

The shield and the sword and the weapons of war.

4 Illustrious art Thou!

More glorious than the mountains of prey!

5 The stout of heart are despoiled, they sleep their sleep! All the men of valour are rendered powerless!

6 At Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob,

The charioteers and the horsemen are sunk in deep sleep!

7 THOU art to be feared, even Thou!

Yea, who can stand before Thee, when Thou art angry?

[blocks in formation]

8 Out of the heavens Thou causest Thy sentence to be heard,

The earth feareth, and is still;

9 When God ariseth to judgment—

To save all the afflicted in the land.

10 Truly, the wrath of man ministereth to Thy praise; What remaineth of wrath, Thou wilt restrain.

11 Make ye vows unto JEHOVAH your God, and pay Let all, who are round about Him,

Bring presents unto Him who is to be feared.

12 HE controleth the spirit of princes;

He is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

them;

Yea, with my voice unto God do I cry aloud;
And He listeneth unto me.

2 In the day of my distress, I sought out the Lord;
My hand was extended towards Him by night,
And it relaxed not;

My soul refused to be comforted.

3 I called God to mind, yet was I troubled;
I meditated upon Him, but my spirits fainted.

4 THOU didst hold mine eyes in watchfulness,
I was disquieted that I could not speak.
5 I reflected upon the days of old—
The years of ancient times.

[blocks in formation]

6 I called to mind my nightly songs;

I communed with my heart,

And my spirit made anxious enquiry: 7 Hath the Lord rejected me for ever?

And will He be gracious no more?

8 Is His loving-kindness come utterly to an end?

(saying)

Hath His promise ceased, unto successive generations?

9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious?

Hath He, in anger, shut up His mercies?

10 But I said: It is mine own weakness;

I will call to mind the years and right hand of the most High. 11 I will call to mind the works of JEHOVAH,

Yea, I will call to mind Thy wonders of old. 12 I will meditate upon all Thy doings,

And think upon Thine acts.

13 O God, holy are Thy ways,

What god is great, as our God?

14 THOU art the God who doeth wonders!

THOU hast made known amongst the nations Thy might! 15 THOU hast redeemed Thy people with Thine arm— Even the sons of Jacob and of Joseph!

16 The waters saw Thee, O God

The waters saw Thee, they trembled ;

Yea, the depths were greatly agitated ! 17 The clouds poured down water, The skies uttered their voice;

18 Yea, Thine arrows went abroad,

The sound of Thy thunder was in the whirlwind. 19 Lightnings illumined the world;

The earth was greatly agitated, yea, it shook!

10 It is mine own weakness—i. e. My dis

trust of God's power and goodness arises from my own infirmity.

20 THY course was through the sea,

And Thy paths were through the mighty waters,

Although Thy footsteps were not perceived.

21 THOU leddest Thy people, like a flock,

By the hand of Moses and of Aaron.

PSALM LXXVIII.

1 LISTEN, O my people, unto my teaching, Incline your ears unto the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in parables,

I will utter wise sentences, from of old.

3 What we have heard and do know,

And what our fathers have recounted unto us,
4 We will not conceal from their children;
But will recount, to the next generation,
The praises of JEHOVAH and His might,

And the wonderful deeds which He hath done.

5 HE appointed a revelation unto Jacob,

And made a law for Israel;

Which He commanded our fathers

To make known unto their children,

6 So that the next generation might know them-
That the children, who should be born, might stand up
And recount them unto their children;

[blocks in formation]

And might place their confidence in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments;

8 And not be, like their fathers,

A generation backsliding and rebellious

A generation, the heart of which was not firmly established, Nor its spirit faithful towards God;

9 Like the sons of Ephraim who, armed and shooting with bows, Turned back in the day of battle.

They kept not the covenant of God,
But refused to walk by His law.
Yea, they forgot His works,

Even the wonderful things which He had shown unto them.

12 In the sight of their fathers, He did wonders,

In the land of Egypt-in the field of Zoan.

13 HE divided the sea, and made them to pass through,

And He piled up the waters like a mound.

14 In the day-time, He led them by a cloud, And all night long, by the light of fire.

15 HE cleft the rocks in the desert,

And made them drink plentifully, as out of the great deep. 16 Yea, He brought streams out of rocks,

And caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17 Yet they went on to sin against Him, Provoking the most High in the wilderness. 18 They tempted God in their hearts,

By asking for food to indulge their appetite. 19 Yea, they spake against God, they said: "Can God furnish a table in the desert?

10 They 8.

i. e. our fathers. See ver.

18 They tempted &c. They rashly called for the divine interference, by miracle,

in their favour (Exod. xvi. and Numbers xi).

18 to indulge their appetite-Heb. for their appetite.
