33 And enableth me to make a stand upon my high places. 34 HE maketh my hands expert in war,

So that a bow of brass is made to bend by mine arm. 35 THOU also givest me a shield, Thy salvation,

And Thy right hand sustaineth me.

Even Thine afflicting hand tendeth to make me great. 36 THOU givest me ample space upon which to tread, And mine ankles do not falter.

37 I pursue mine enemies and overtake them;

Nor do I turn back until I have made an end of them. 38 I smite them so that they cannot stand;

They fall under my feet.

39 THOU girdest me with might for the battle;

THOU layest low beneath me those who rise up against me. 40 THOU makest mine enemies to turn their backs unto me; As for those who hate me, I bring them to silence. 41 They cry aloud, but there is no one to save—

Unto JEHOVAH, but He answereth them not.

42 I beat them to powder, like the dust before the wind,
I trample them down, like the mire of the streets.
43 THOU deliverest me from the strivings of the people,
THOU dost constitute me head of the nations;

A people, whom I know not, become subject to me.

tended, by raising my character, to
qualify me for receiving increase of
temporal prosperity. See Ps. cxix. 67,

thee, and that He might prove thee
to do thee good at thy latter end."
Deut. viii. 16. And "before honour is
humility." Prov. xv. 33.

36 Thou givest &c.-Heb. Thou makest
large my walking under me.
37 pursue- "David enquired at the Lord,

saying, Shall I pursue after this troop?
shall I overtake them? And He answered
him, Pursue for thou shalt surely
overtake them, and without fail recover
all." 1 Sam. xxx. 8. See Ps. vii. 5.,

44 As soon as their ear hath heard, they attend unto me; The sons of the alien make a shew of submission to me. 45 The sons of the alien shrink with fear,

And come out of their fortresses.

46 JEHOVAH liveth! and blessed is my rock, And exalted is the God of my salvation! 47 The God, who avengeth my cause,

And subdueth the nations under me!

48 Who delivereth me from mine enemies!

Truly Thou raisest me above those who rise up against me, THOU rescuest me from the man of violence;

49 Therefore will I praise Thee, O JEHOVAH, among the nations, And hymn unto Thy name;

50 Who hast wrought great salvation for His king,

And shewn mercy to His anointed,

To David, and to his seed for ever.

PSALM XIX.

1 THE heavens declare the glory of God,

And the expanse displayeth the work of His hands.

2 Day after day it poureth forth instruction,

3

And night after night it pointeth out knowledge.

They have neither speech nor language,

They have not an audible voice;

4 Yet their lesson goeth forth throughout the earth,

And their eloquence unto the extremities of the world!

In them He hath placed a pavilion for the sun,

5 And he is like a bridegroom issuing from his nuptial chamber,

Like a strong man who delighteth to run his course.

6 His going forth is from one end of the heavens, And his circuit unto the other end of them;

So that there is nothing hidden from his heat.

7 The law of JEHOVAH is perfect, reviving the spirits; The revealed will of JEHOVAH is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of JEHOVAH are right, rejoicing the heart; The precepts of JEHOVAH are clean, giving light unto the eyes. 9 The religion of JEHOVAH is pure, enduring for ever;

The judgments of JEHOVAH are true, all of them are righteous; 10 They are more to be desired than gold, even much fine gold, And sweeter than honey, even the droppings of the honey-combs.

4 in them-i. e. in the heavens.
- pavilion-the clouds within which the
sun occasionally withdraws himself.
5 bridegroom-This alludes to the fes-
tivities accompanying eastern marriages.
The custom was for the bridegroom
to come forth at night, and to appear
with a number of attendants bearing
lamps (Matt. xxv. 1.). The splendour
of his dress, the hilarity of his coun-
tenance and the joy diffused through
the whole company (John iii. 29.) are
also probably referred to.

-to run his course- i. e. to bear, as a
courier, the message which has been
entrusted to him. As such messengers
travelled on foot, strength and speed
would be the great requisites for them,
and they would naturally take pleasure in
displaying these qualifications. "some
shall run before his chariots." 1 Sam.
viii. 11. "Then said Ahimaaz the son
of Zadok yet again to Joab, But how-
soever, let me, I pray thee, also run
after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore
wilt thou run, my son, seeing that
thou hast no tidings ready? But how-

By them, moreover, is Thy servant enlightened;

In keeping them, there is great reward.

12 Oh that I might discern mine errors!

Cleanse Thou me from those which are hidden from me. 13 From wilful transgressions also restrain Thy servant,

Let them not have dominion over me;

Then shall I be upright,

And cleansed from much sin.

14 Let the words of my mouth be acceptable,

And the breathings of my heart present unto Thee,
O JEHOVAH, my Rock and my Redeemer.

PSALM XX.

1 MAY JEHOVAH answer thee in the day of thy strait!
May the name of the God of Jacob defend thee!
2 May He send help to thee from the sanctuary,
And from Sion support thee!

3 May He be mindful of thy many offerings,

And accept thy sacrifices!

4 May He give unto thee according to thy heart's desire, And may He fulfil all thy designs!

5 May we sing of thy victory,

And in the name of our God may we raise on high our banner! May JEHOVAH fulfil all thy requests!

[blocks in formation]

6 Now I know that JEHOVAH is the Saviour of His anointed-
That He answereth him from His holy heavens,
With the saving strength of His right hand.

7 These glory in chariots, and these, in horses ;
But we glory in the name of JEHOVAH, our God.
8 They bend and fall;

But we rise up and continue erect.

9 May JEHOVAH save the king!

May He answer us when we call unto Him!

PSALM XXI.

1 IN Thy strength, JEHOVAH, the King rejoiceth,
In Thy salvation how greatly doth He exult!
2 THOU hast granted unto Him the desire of His heart,
THOU hast not withholden the request of His lips;
3 For Thou presentest Him with choice blessings,
THOU placest upon His head a crown of pure gold.
4 HE asked life of Thee, Thou hast granted it to Him;
Even length of days, for ever and ever.

Great is His glory through Thy salvation;

THOU hast laid upon Him honour and majesty.

6 For Thou makest Him most blessed to eternity,
THOU dost exhilarate Him with the joy of Thy presence.
