THE

METHODIST NEW CONNEXION

MAGAZINE.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

"A HAPPY NEW YEAR," we all say to one another as we meet on the first day of the year. The formula of words is intended to express a heartfelt wish for the happiness throughout the year of the person to whom we speak. The custom is fitting and beautiful.

But will it be a happy new year? Will all the pleasant things our friends wish for us really come into our lives? Whether it shall be so or not will depend upon ourselves. There is in the mere uttering of good wishes on New Year's Day no talismanic power to ensure prosperity and gladness throughout the months.

The wish may become a prayer to God from a sincere heart, a benediction of believing love; and faith-filled prayer brings favour; the benediction of pure and holy lips leaves blessing. Yet the utterance of the words by a friend, even with true love and earnest prayer, will not of itself make the year happy. Heaven's gifts, rich and free as they are, and pressed upon us with divine importunity, will not enter where they are not wanted. The truest and most fervent prayer will not bring down favours on lives that are shut against them. Even God does not bless us against our

will.

How, then, can we make our new year happy? Under what conditions will the good wishes of the day be realised, and the prayers for us be answered in our lives?

For one thing, we must take Christ with us. No life can be truly blessed without His benediction. No happiness is real which is not brightened by the smile of His favour. No year can be really prosperous if He is left out of it. Life is worth living only with Him.

"The year that is far above rubics shall be
The year of our lives that is closest to Thee."
