GENERAL CONFESSION.

O God, most holy, we bow before thee with deep humiliation of spirit. With penitent hearts we would confess our manifold offences. Thou, O God, hast done us good continually, yet we have sinned against thee. We have been too often unmindful of thy goodness and unthankful for thy mercies. We have too often forgotten that God who daily loadeth us with benefits. We have been ungrateful and rebellious children. Our hope, O God, is not in works of righteousness which we have done, but in thine infinite mercy declared unto us by Jesus Christ, our Lord.

SUPPLICATION.

O God, be gracious unto us, and visit us not in wrath, as our iniquities have most justly deserved. Spare thou them that confess and forsake their faults. Grant us repentance unto newness of life. Dispose us rightly to improve this holy day, and the various means of religion which we enjoy. May we cultivate becoming dispositions of

humility and piety. May we abhor sin, which alone separateth between man and his God. May we earnestly seek to be delivered from the power of temptation, and to be cleansed from all unrighteousness. Cleanse thou us, O God, we beseech thee, from all our secret faults, and keep back thy servants from all presumptuous and wilful transgressions: let them not have dominion over us. Search us, O God, and know our hearts: try us, and know our thoughts, and see if there be any evil way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting, for thy mercy's sake, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever. Amen.

PSALM XCV. 1—7.

"O come, let us sing unto the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills also is His. The sea is His, and He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down. the Lord our Maker.

Let us kneel before
For he is our God,

and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand."

[Here a Psalm or Hymn to be sung, after which portions of Scripture to be read.]

GENERAL THANKSGIVING.

O God, who art the Father of angels and of men, who art our God, and hast been our fathers' God throughout all generations, we thy dependent creatures desire to bless and magnify thy name for all thy mercies.

From thee, O God, cometh down every

good, and every perfect gift. To thee we are indebted, that we are rational and social, moral and religious creatures.

The numberless enjoyments which we derive from the various faculties with which we are endued, from the kind affections by which we are animated, and from the connexions and circumstances of life in which we are placed, are all the gifts of thy bounty. Thy name, O God, be praised for ever.

Through every period of our lives thy Providence hath watched over us, and thy goodness hath made us happy. In weakness thou art our strength, in sickness and sorrow thou art our exceeding great consolation and support. Thy kind hand protected our feeble infancy: and thou art the stay and solace of our declining years. Thy tender mercies have ever followed us. Even in the hour of affliction we have experienced thy loving kindness. Thou dost not wantonly grieve thy frail and dependent creatures, but chastenest us in mercy, that we may become partakers of thy holiness, and of eternal happiness.

O gracious Father, how merciful are all thy dealings towards us! and how precious is that faith which enables us to look up

unto thee as the Great Governor of the world, whose Providence is over all the works of thy hands, and without whom not even a sparrow falleth to the ground!

But above all, O God, do we bless thee, that we can look beyond the present world; that thou hast brought life and immortality to the clearest light by the Gospel of thy son, Jesus Christ our Lord; that through him thou hast graciously assured us we shall not die eternally.

Blessed for ever be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for us.

GENERAL PETITION.

O gracious Father, enable us evermore to conduct ourselves in all respects as the heirs of a glorious immortality.

May it not be in vain for us, that light is come into the world; but professing ourselves disciples of the Lord Jesus, may we ever act, and speak, and think, as Christians.
