And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down ; for to-day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received Him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That He was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchæus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any. thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come unto this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Wednesday-Second Week after Epiphany.
St. Joan I. 1-14. IN N the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in dark. ness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. ROMANS XI. 17–25. F some of the branches be broken off, and
thou, being a wild olive-tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive-tree ; boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Benot high minded, but fear: for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest He also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell severity ; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in His goodness : otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. For if thou wert cut out of the olive-tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive-tree : how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive-tree P For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

ROMANS IV. 13—25.
of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they which are
of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect : because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace ; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham ; who is the father of us all (as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations), before Him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what He had promised, He was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him ; but for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on Him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead ; who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
