The following tables contain the maximum permissible pitches of stays in flat plates. These tables are only correct for such cases in which the two pitches are equal. As long as they are nearly equal -say, within 20 % of each other-it is sufficiently correct to take the geometrical mean pitch. When the difference is greater certain restrictions come into force (see p. 384). When the pitches are less than six inches there are further restrictions. (See T. W. Trail, 1890, p. 29.)
