Mr. Cranston presented resolutions of the legislature of Rhode Island, relative to the distribution of decisions of the Supreme Court among the several States and Territories.

Mr. Jacob Thompson presented the petition of Joseph de la Franciaheretofore presented February 19, 1845.

Mr. Giddings presented a petition of citizens of the State of Ohio, praying that Congress will not admit to a seat in either house any person claiming to be a Senator or Representative of Texas; the petitioners believing that no citizen of Texas can be constitutionally eligible to a seat in the Congress of the United States.

Mr. Tilden presented a petition of similar import from citizens of Ohio. Mr. Root presented a petition of similar import from citizens of Clarksfield, Huron county, Ohio.

Mr. Strohm presented a petition of citizens of Lancaster county, in the State of Pennsylvania, praying for the passage of a law making a participation in the domestic slave-trade upon the high seas a penal offence.

Mr. Dillingham presented the petition of Henry Richardson-heretofore presented December 10, 1844.

Mr. Leake presented the petition of William Saunders and William R. Porter, sureties of William Estis-heretofore presented December 12, 1844. Ordered, That the said resolutions and petitions be referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

Mr. Strohm presented two memorials of citizens of Lancaster county, in the State of Pennsylvania, remonstrating against the admission of Texas as a slave-holding State into this Union.

Mr. Gordon presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Delaware county, in the State of New York.

Mr. Williams presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Lubec, in the State of Maine.

Mr. Joseph R. Ingersoll presented a memorial of similar import from the Association of Friends for promoting and improving the condition of the free people of color in the city of Philadelphia.

Mr. Root presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Wellington, Loraine county, Ohio.

Mr. Tilden presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Summit county, Ohio.

Mr. Scammon presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of the State of Maine.

Mr. Wheaton presented four memorials of similar import from citizens of Manlius, Otisco, Lafayette, and Salina, in Onondaga county, in the State of New York.

Mr. Caleb B. Smith presented two memorials of similar import from citizens of the State of Indiana.

Mr. Elias B. Holmes presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Pittsford, in the State of New York.

Mr. Benton presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Amsterdam, Montgomery county, New York; and one from citizens of Montgomery county, in said State.

Mr. Preston King presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of Madrid, in the State of New York; one from citizens of Canton; one from citizens of Lewis county; and one from citizens of Lisbon, St. Lawrence county, in said State.

Mr. Hampton presented two memorials of similar import from citizens of the State of New Jersey.

Mr. McIlvaine presented a memorial of citizens of Chester county, Pennsylvania, remonstrating against the appointment of chaplains to Congress: which was laid upon the table.

Mr. Culver presented two petitions of citizens of Washington and Rensselaer counties, in the State of New York, praying for the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia, and of the slave-trade between the. several States.

Mr. Giddings presented a memorial of similar import from citizens of the State of Ohio, members of the Ohio yearly meeting of Friends.

Ordered, That the said memorials and petitions be laid upon the table. Mr. Goodyear presented a petition of Lawrence Van Dyck and others, heirs of Jehoiachim Van Valkenburg, of the county of Schoharie, in the State of New York, praying remuneration for losses sustained by the death of their ancestor during the revolutionary war.

Mr. Jenkins presented a memorial of Noah Clark, of Oneida county, in the State of New York, a soldier of the Revolution, praying for a pension; Also, a petition of the heirs of Bartholomew Brodock, of the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, praying for a pension in consideration of the services of the said Brodock during the revolutionary war;

Also, a petition of Catharine Keller, of the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, praying that the pension of her late husband may be continued to her.

Mr. Foster presented a petition of Patrick Kelly, sen., of Indiana county, in the State of Pennsylvania, praying for a pension in consideration of services rendered during the revolutionary war, as a draughted militia soldier of the Lancaster county militia;

Also, a petition of Andrew Maglaughlin, of Indiana county, in the State of Pennsylvania, praying for an increase of pension under the act of 7th June, 1832;

Also, a petition of James Donahay, sen., of Indiana county, in the State of Pennsylvania, praying for a pension for services rendered during the revolutionary war at different periods;

Also, a petition of George Scott, of Westmoreland county, in the State of Pennsylvania, praying for compensation for services rendered the United States during the revolutionary war as an "Indian spy" and soldier.

Mr. Pollock presented a petition of William Randall, of Augusta township, Northumberland county, in the State of Pennsylvania, praying for a

pension for five years' services as an enlisted soldier in the United States

army.

Mr. John W. Houston presented a petition of Mark Simpson, of the State of Delaware, praying to be placed upon the "pension list roll" at the full pay of twelve dollars per month, as the six dollars per month which he now receives is insufficient for his support.

Mr. Hopkins presented a petition of Mrs. Esther Humphries, of Washington county, in the State of Virginia, praying for a pension as the widow of Robert Humphries, a revolutionary soldier;

Also, a petition of Peter Rifle, of the county of Wythe, in the State of Virginia, praying for a pension for services rendered in the revolutionary war as a soldier.

Mr. Joseph Johnson presented a petition of John Patton, praying for a pension for services rendered the United States during the late war as captain of a company of infantry of the Virginia militia, and for injuries sustained in said service, rendering him unable to perform manual labor. Mr. Leake presented the following petitions:

One of Elizabeth Martin, of the county of Campbell, in the State of Virginia, praying for a pension as the widow of the late George Martin, for services rendered by him as an express rider and deputy quartermaster during the revolutionary war;

Also, one of Nancy King, of the county of Bedford, in the State of Virginia, praying for a pension as the widow of Jesse Tucker, deceased, her first husband, for services rendered by him during the revolutionary war as a soldier;

Also, one of William Via, of Virginia, praying for a pension for services rendered during the revolutionary war;

Also, one of Lucy Wright, of the county of Nelson, in the State of Virginia, praying for a pension as the widow of Andrew Wright, deceased, for services rendered by him as a soldier in the revolutionary war.

Mr. Trumbo presented a petition of Dixon Dedman, of Fleming county, in the State of Kentucky, praying for a pension for services rendered as a soldier during the revolutionary war, and for which he never received any compensation.

Mr. Haralson presented the petition of Lyddal Estes for a pension — heretofore presented December 10, 1844.

Mr. Grider presented the petition of Ralph Young-heretofore presented February 11, 1845.

Mr. Cullom presented a petition of Catharine Knox, of Rutherford county, Tennessee, widow of Saul Knox, and Peggy Eoff, of Coffee county, in said State, widow of Isaac Eoff, praying for pensions under the various acts for the benefit of the widows of revolutionary pen

sioners.

Mr. Tilden presented a petition of James Hillman, of Youngstown, in the State of Ohio, praying for a pension for services rendered during the revolutionary war as a soldier.

Mr. Cunningham presented a petition of Lewis Laing, of Butler county, in the State of Ohio, praying for a pension on account of a wound received at the battle and defeat of St. Clair while acting in the capacity of quartermaster sergeant.

Mr. Hoge presented a petition of Abner Watson, of Mercer county, in

the State of Illinois, praying for a pension for services rendered as a soldier in the revolutionary war.

Mr. Barclay Martin presented the petition of Isabella Baldridge-heretofore presented March 21, 1844.

Mr. Delano presented the petition of Levi Nichols-heretofore presented February 5, 1845;

Also, the petition of George Stevenson-heretofore presented January 27, 1845.

Ordered, That the foregoing petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

Mr. Joseph R. Ingersoll presented a memorial of citizens of the State of Pennsylvania interested in mineral coal, praying for a moderate appropriation to extend and complete the experiments on American coal.

Mr. Alexander D. Sims presented resolutions of citizens of Georgetown, in the State of South Carolina, complaining of the unconstitutionality of the protective policy, praying a modification of the tariff act of 1842, and also for the establishment of the warehousing system.

Ordered, That said memorials be referred to the Committee of Ways and Means.

Mr. Daniel P. King presented two memorials of citizens of Salem, in the State of Massachusetts, in relation to proposals for a Congress of nations for settling national disputes.

Mr. Brodhead presented a memorial of citizens of Easton, in the State of Pennsylvania, complaining of the conduct of the commander of a British man-of-war toward the colony of Liberia, on the coast of Africa; and praying Congress to recognise the said colony and government of Liberia as a sovereign and independent republic.

Ordered, That said memorials be referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Douglass presented a memorial of Josephine Nourse, widow of Benjamin F. Nourse, late an assistant surgeon in the United States army, praying for half pay of her husband, who perished in the Florida war: which was referred to the Committee on Military Affairs.

Mr. Lumpkin presented a memorial of George B. Russell, praying payment for money and goods furnished to certain Cherokee Indians, under authority from the Indian agent, Benjamin F. Curry.

Mr. Reuben Chapman presented a memorial of W. J. Price, of Rocky Spring, in the State of Alabama, praying the relinquishment of the reversionary interest of the United States to a certain (Cherokee) Indian reservation.

Ordered, That said memorials be referred to the Committee on Indian Affairs.

Mr. Relfe presented a memorial of the legal heirs of Julien Dubuque, praying the confirmation of the title to a tract of land granted to said Dubuque by the Baron de Carondelet, Intendent General of the province of Louisiana, on the 10th day of November, 1796: which memorial was referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims.

Mr. Joseph R. Ingersoll presented a memorial of John E. Holland, praying for the payment of his travelling expenses under orders while a captain's clerk in the United States navy.

Mr. Dunlap presented a memorial of Holt Ingraham for remuneration,
