deep. Borne on the surface of a changing element, and exposed to the vicissitudes of the inconstant skies, may we always feel ourselves in the presence and merciful care of that infinite and holy God, who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with a span. Preserve us, we pray thee, from the dangers of the sea; from shipwreck; from fire; from the wrath of the tempest; from the violence of enemies; and grant that we may arrive at our desired haven, in safety, health, and peace, and with a thankful remembrance of thy rich and manifold mercies. But we do more especially pray, O Lord our God, that if thou shouldst see fit to bring us into peril and misfortune, we may bear thy whole will with perfect submission, and surrender ourselves in every event to thine absolute and all wise disposal. Whether we are in danger or at rest, in sickness or health, in life or death, let us be thine, O Lord, and wholly thine.

Hear us in behalf of our country, and grant that it

may constantly prosper under thy care, and be defended with thy favourable kindness as with a shield. Bless our absent friends, wherever they may be ; preserve them from evil; and in thy great mercy permit us to see them again, and rejoice in their society and welfare.

We thank thee, that thou hast thus far preserv ed us'; we thank thee for this opportunity of calling on thy name; we commend ourselves and our interests to thy holy keeping; and ascribe unto thee all honour and glory, dominion and praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this.

O LORD, our God, who madest heaven, and earth, and sea, and all that therein is, and who keepest thy promise forever; mercifully hear the prayers of thy servants; deliver us from the dangers of the seas; protect and prosper us in the way we go, and bring us to our haven and to our friends in peace; but above all things grant that we may always submit to thy will and pleasure, and obey

thy most holy law, and so
pass the
waves of this
changing and troublesome
world, that we may finally
come to the land of ever-
lasting life; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then may be read other Prayers of the Morning or Evening Service, or else the Benediction may immediately follow.

our life. Hear, Lord, and save us, in the name of our blessed Saviour, thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

THOU, O Lord, who stillest the raging of the sea, hear, hear us, and save us, that we perish not.

O God, whose Son Jesus Christ did save his disciples ready to perish in a storm; hear us, and save us, we beseech thee.

Lord be merciful to us sinners, and save us for thy

gracious Lord God, who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things below; look down, we beseech thee, and hear us, calling out of the depth of misery, and out of the jaws of this death, which is now ready to swallow us up. Save, Lord, or else we perish. The living, the living shall praise thee. O send thy word of command to rebuke the raging winds, and the roaring sea; that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve thee, and to glorify thy name all the days of

PSALM 107.

A

O THAT men would praise the Lord for his goodness; and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

That they would offer unto him the sacrifice of thanksgiving; and tell out his works with gladness!

They that go down to the sea in ships; and occupy their business in great waters ;

These men see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep.

For at his word, the stormy wind ariseth: which lifteth up the waves thereof.

They are carried up to the heaven, and down again to the deep; their soul melteth away because of the trouble.

So when they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, he delivereth them out of their distress.

For he maketh the storm to cease, so that the waves thereof are still.

Then are they glad, because they are at rest; and so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be.

O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness; and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

That they would exalt him also in the congregation of the people; and praise him in the seat of the elders!

COLLECT OF THANKSGIV

ING.

O MOST mighty and gracious good God, thy mercy is over all thy works, but in special manner hath

been extended towards us, whom thou hast so powerfully and wonderfully defended. Thou hast showed us terrible things, and wonders in the deep, that we might see how powerful and gracious a God thou art; how able and ready to help those who trust in thee. Thou hast showed us how both winds and seas obey thy command; that we may learn even from them hereafter to obey thy voice, and to do thy will. We therefore bless and glorify thy name, for this thy mercy, in saving us when we were ready to perish. And we beseech thee, make us as truly sensible now of thy mercy, as we were then of the danger; and give us hearts always ready to express our thankfulness, not only by words, but also by our lives, in being more obedient to thy holy commandments. Continue, we beseech thee, this thy goodness to us; that we, whom thou hast saved, may serve thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THREE ADDITIONAL SERVICES

FOR MORNING OR EVENING.

FIRST SERVICE.

The Service is to be introduced by the following Address from the Minister to the People.

O BE joyful in the Lord, all ye people; serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.

Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he who hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name.

For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

People.

Unto the Lord our God will we lift up our souls, and magnify his name together.

THE INTRODUCTORY PRAYER.

O LORD God Almighty, before whom all creatures bow, the fountain of life and the father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants come before thee in humble acknowledgment of thine eternal power and majesty. Thou art the only living and true God; thy kingdom ruleth over all, and thy goodness is without bounds. Assist us to worship thee in spirit and in truth; may we celebrate thy perfections and speak of thy wonderful works with reverence; give thanks unto thee, and sing thy praises with joy; humble ourselves before thee with sincere and contrite hearts; and pray unto

thee under a just sense of our dependence on thy providence, and with fervent charity to all mankind. Graciously accept these our devotions, which we offer in the name and as disciples of Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom thou hast encouraged us to come with confidence to the throne of thy grace.

true God; God in heaven above, and earth beneath, and throughout all worlds; there is none beside thee.

Peo. Unto us there is but one God; to whom be glory for ever.

Min. Thou alone art from everlasting, without beginning of days, or end of years; thou livest and reignest for ever and ever.

Peo. We magnify thee, the high and lofty One, who inhabitest eternity.

Min. Thou art a spiritual and incorruptible being; who dwellest in light inaccessible, and full of glory; whom no mortal eye hath seen, or can see.

Peo. We would worship thee, who art a spirit, in spirit and in truth.

Min. Infinite art thou, O God; thou dwellest not in temples made with hands; the universe is thy temple, thou art present at all times in every part of thy dominion.

Peo. In thee we live, and move, and have our being.

Min. Thine is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the majesty ; all things in heaven and earth are thine; thine is the kingdom, and thou art
