STEPHEN'S NEW COMMENTARIES.-Eighth Edition, 1880.

Just published, in 4 vols., 8vo., 41. 4s. cloth.

MR. SERJEANT STEPHEN'S NEW COMMENTARIES on the LAWS OF ENGLAND, partly founded on Blackstone. By JAMES STEPHEN, Esq., LL.D., Judge of County Courts. The Eighth Edition. Prepared for the press by HENRY ST. JAMES STEPHEN, of the Middle Temple, Barrister-at-Law.

"Dr. James Stephen has just brought out the eighth edition of Mr. Serjeant Stephen's Commentaries on the Laws of England (founded on Blackstone). This edition deserves more attention than previous editions, for the reason that it has been revised with a view to giving full effect to the alterations in our law and practice introduced by the Judicature Acts, and with the design of giving a more scientific classification of crimes, so as to bring the last book into harmony with the general structure of the proposed Criminal Code. Dr. Stephen has been assisted in his work by his son, Mr. Henry St. James Stephen. From our examination of the work (facilitated by the adoption of the American plan of cutting the leaves in the binding), we believe it will be found to be one of the most valuable text books which we possess, not only as to the general law, but as to the new system which has grown up under the Judicature Acts."-LAW TIMES.

"It is quite unnecessary for us to reiterate the praises we have, on many former occasions, bestowed upon this excellent work. A new edition has been rendered necessary, both by reason of the last edition having been exhausted, and of the recent changes in the law effected by the operation of the Judicature Acts; and Dr. Stephen has not shirked the labour required. The last edition was published in the year 1874; and, although the changes then intended to be introduced by the Judicature Act of 1873 were embodied in it, yet the subsequent Judicature Acts and new rules of procedure, supplemented by judicial decisions upon them, have made Dr. Stephen's task of revision no light one."-LAW JOURNAL. "We feel bound to state that the edition (Eighth) before us is certain to maintain, with greater credit if possible, the position of its predecessors, which is that of the Student's best text-book on the General Laws of England."-ARTICLED CLERKS JOURNAL.

This Edition is set for the Intermediate Examinations for Solicitors.

"Another book written for articled clerks, whom it will greatly assist for their examinations. It possesses the great merit of being the product of actual experience, and not merely theoretical instruction. The author appears to have done for himself while pursuing his studies as an articled clerk what he recommends to others to do. Mr. Mosely presents to his readers a complete chart of study for each year of clerkship; the office work that should be learned, and the books that should be read; concluding with a chapter of hints how best to prepare for the final examinations. We can cordially commend this little volume to those apprentices to the law who are resolved to devote themselves to labour as the only sure pathway to success."-LAW TIMES.

UNDERHILL'S LAW OF TORTS.-Third Edition.

Just published, in 1 vol., post 8vo., 8s. cloth.

A SUMMARY of the LAW of TORTS; or Wrongs independent of Contract. Third Edition, including the Employers' Liability Act, 1880. By ARTHUR UNDERHILL, M.A., LL.D., of Lincoln's Inn, Esq., Barrister-at-Law; assisted by CLAUDE C. M. PLUMPTRE, of the Middle Temple, Esq., Barrister-at-Law.

"He has set forth the elements of the law with clearness and accuracy. The little work of Mr. Underhill is inexpensive and may be relied on."-LAW TIMES.

"The plan is a good one and has been honestly carried out, and a good index facilitates reference to the contents of the book."-JUSTICE OF THE PEACE. "Mr. Underhill's ability in making a clear digest of the subject treated of in this volume is conspicuous. Many works would have to be consulted for the information here concisely given, so that practitioners as well as students will find it useful."-NEWS OF THE WORLD.

"His book is so clearly written that it is easily comprehensible. To the law student, for whom it is more particularly written, it may be recommended both for its simplicity and accuracy."MORNING ADVERTISER.

"Intended for the student who desires to have principles before entering into particulars, and we know no book on the subject so well adapted for the purpose."-LAW EXAMINATION JOURNAL.

"We strongly recommend the manual to students of both branches of the profession.” — PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION JOURNAL.

UNDERHILL'S LAW OF TRUSTS AND TRUSTEES.

1 vol., post 8vo., 88. cloth.

A CONCISE MANUAL of the LAW RELATING TO PRIVATE TRUSTS AND TRUSTEES. BY ARTHUR UNDERHILL, M.A., of Lincoln's Inn, Esq., Barrister-at-Law.

"We recently published a short review or notice of Mr. A. F. Leach's 'Digest of the Law of Probate Duty,' and remarked that it was framed after the model of Sir Fitzjames Stephen's Digest of the Criminal Law and Law of Evidence from the Indian Acts,' and which has been followed by Mr. Pollock in his 'Digest of the Law of Partnership. Mr. Underhill has, in the abovenamed volume, performed a similar task in relation to the Law of Trusts.' In seventy-six

articles he has summarized the principles of the 'Law of Trusts' as distinctly and accurately as the subject will admit, and has supplemented the articles with illustrations."-LAW JOURNAL.

"The work is intended for those who cannot study larger tomes, and Mr. Underhill is sanguine that the student will be able to learn and remember all that he has written. We believe this to be quite possible, and commend the work to the attention of students."-LAW TIMES.

PLUMPTRE ON THE LAW OF CONTRACTS.

1 vol., post 8vo., 8s. cloth.

Forming a companion volume to Underhill on "Torts."

A SUMMARY of the PRINCIPLES of the LAW of SIMPLE CONTRACTS. BY CLAUDE C. M. PLUMPTRE, of the Middle Temple, Esq., Barristerat-Law. (Middle Temple Common Law Scholar, Hilary Term, 1877.)

"This book is compiled upon the same principle as the works of Mr. Underhill on Torts and Trusts. Our readers will remember that Mr. Claude Plumptre assisted in the compilation of the second edition of Mr. Underhill's work on Torts. The object of the present work will appear from the opening paragraph of the Preface. -It may cause some little surprise when it is seen that, notwithstanding the many able works on the Law of Contracts that have been published, I have ventured to add another volume to that already formidable array of legal literature. The reason why I have done so is, because this branch of the law, however diversely treated, still remains unreduced, whether by means of articles and notes, or rules and sub-rules, or otherwise, into the form of a concise summary or digest; and in the present work I have hoped, to a certain extent, to supply the want thus existing.'

"The promise thus held out is amply realized in the body of the work, which will be found of

the greatest assistance not only to the student who desires to become acquainted with the law of contracts, but to the practitioner who wishes to note up the most recent decisions.

"The body of the work is divided into three parts. In Part I. the author treats of "The Parties to a Simple Contract," referring to the cases of contracts by infants, married women, lunatics, drunkards, persons under duress, convicts and outlaws, bankrupts, corporations and agents. Part II. has reference to the constituent parts of a contract, and illegal and fraudulent contracts; and Part III. to the formation of a simple contract. In this third part the author deals with the 4th and 17th sections of the Statute of Frauds, the Statutes of Limitation and their effect on simple contracts, the discharge of the obligation imposed by a simple contract, oral evidence and written contracts, damages, and contracts entered into abroad."-Law Examination Journal.

TUDOR'S REAL PROPERTY, &c.-Third Edition.

One thick Volume, royal 8vo., 21. 12s. 6d. cloth.

A SELECTION of LEADING CASES on the LAW RELATING to REAL PROPERTY, CONVEYANCING, and the CONSTRUCTION of WILLS and DEEDS; with Notes. By OWEN DAVIES TUDOR, Esq., of the Middle Temple, Barrister-at-Law, Author of "A Selection of Leading Cases in Equity." Third Edition. "We cordially recommend the work to the practitioner and the student alike, but especially to the former."-SOLICITORS' JOURNAL.

"This and the other volumes of Mr. Tudor are almost a law library in themselves, and we are satisfied that the student would learn more law from the careful reading of them than he would

acquire from double the time given to the elaborate treatises which learned professors recommend the student to peruse, with entire forgetfulness that time and brains are limited, and that to do what they advise would be the work of a life."-LAW TIMES.

By W. WHITTAKER BARRY, Esq., of Lincoln's Inn, Barrister-at-Law, late Holder of the Studentship of the Inns of Court, and Author of "A Treatise on the Statutory Jurisdiction of the Court of Chancery."

"A careful study of Mr. Barry's book will, we believe, enable the student to comprehend and use with safety precedents of such instruments as are likely to be intrusted to him for execution."-LAW JOURNAL.

"We feel bound to strongly recommend it

to the practitioner as well as the student. The author has proved himself to be a master of the subject."-LAW MAGAZINE.

"The author's design was to do for the practice of conveyancing what Mr. Joshua Williams has done for its principles."-LAW TIMES.

"He thinks clearly, and writes very well.". LAW TIMES.

"As it stands it appears to us to be a useful guide to the leading principles of Equity Jurisprudence. The book is written in easy, familiar language, and is likely to prove more attractive to the student than many formal treatises.”— SOLICITORS' JOURNAL.
