By 29 and 30 Vic., cap. 154 (28th June, 1866), the company was authorised to extend the line to the Wilts Somerset and Weymouth, at Westbury. Length, 13 miles. New capital, 200,000l. in shares, which may be issued at 6 per cent. preference, or in half-shares, and 66,000l. on loan. This extension was abandoned in 1870.

The dividends declared on ordinary shares during the year have been at the rate of 1 per cent. per annum.

23.-BERWICKSHIRE.

Incorporated by 25 and 26 Vic., cap. 142 (7th July, 1862), to construct a line from the St. Boswell's station of the North British to Dunse. Length, 20 miles. Capital, 190,0007. in 107. shares; loans, 33,3007. subscribes 50,000l. and works the line. November, 1863. The remainder from Boswell's (4 miles), was opened on the By 29 and 30 Vic., cap. 278 (30th July, 1866), the company was authorised to raise additional capital to the extent of 30,000 in shares, and 10,000. on mortgage. The North British were by the same Act authorised to subscribe the sum of 30,000., towards completion of the Berwickshire.

Arrangements with North British, which Opened from Dunse to Earlston on the 16th Earlston to North British, at Newtown St. 2nd October, 1865.

REVENUE.-It was reported for the half-year ending 31st January, 1870, that the receipts, less half-year's rent of Dunse station, were 2,316., while for the corresponding half-year of 1869 they were 2,0741., showing an increase of 2421. The account for the half-year showed that 2,3571. had been received, and 1,081 expended, leaving

a balance of 1,2761. To this was added from the previous half-year 1,3071., making 2,583, out of which a dividend at the rate of 14 per cent. per annum left a balance of 6741.

The receipts for the half-year to 31st July were, less half-year's rent of Dunse station, 2,0727.; while, for the corresponding half-year ending 31st July, 1869, they were 1,932, showing an increase of 1397. The revenue account for the half-year gave the amount received at 2,1197.; paid, 1,0557.; leaving a balance of 1,063.; there remains, therefore, for the year, to the credit of this account, 1,737.

CAPITAL-The receipts to 31st July, 1870, amounted to 160,8297., and the expenditure to 160,3811., leaving a balance on hand of 4481.

24.-BIRKENHEAD.

An amalgamation of a company incorporated under the title of the BIRKENHEAD LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE JUNCTION, and of the CHESTER AND BIRKENHEAD, under Ast 11 Vic., cap. 222 (1847). By an Act passed 1st July, 1852 (16 Vic., cap. 167), this undertaking became dissolved and incorporated anew, under the same title. It enacts that the company shall be limited to the works at the time vested in the dissolved company, or authorised, viz.:-1st, a main line from Chester to Grange Lane; 2nd, Grange Lane to Monk's Ferry; 3rd, Grange Lane to Bridge End, all at Birkenhead; 4th, share in Chester Station; a railway from L. & N. W. at Chester to L. & N. W. at Lower Walton, Runcorn. Productive mileage, 48 miles.

By 22 and 23 Vic., cap. 74 (1st August, 1859), the company was authorised to change its name to "Birkenhead," to make a branch from Hooton to Helsby, and a branch to Tranmere Pool. Length of the line from Hooton to Helsby, 8 miles. Opened 1st July, 1863.

By 24 and 25 Vic., cap. 134, the line is vested in the London and North Western and Great Western, the Birkenhead register being kept by the former.

By 25 and 26 Vic., cap. 198 (17th July, 1862), the leasing companies were authorised to construct a line from Hooton to Parkgate. Length, 5 miles. Opened 1st Oct., 1866. The 4 per cent. preference shares have been issued to the extent of 220,2007.

26.-BISHOP'S CASTLE.

By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 173 (29th June, 1865), the company was authorised to extend the line from Chirbury to the Minsterley branch of the Shrewsbury and Welshpool. Length, 94 miles. New capital, 100,0007. in shares, and 33,000l. by loan. Preference shares not to be issued until the line is opened from Montgomery to Bishop's Castle. By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 241 (5th July, 1865), the company was authorised to extend the line to Craven Arms, and to effect other alterations. Length, 4 miles. By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 323 (5th July, 1865), the company was authorised to make certain deviations and to substitute other lines, and to raise new capital to the extent of 90,0007. in shares, and 30,0007. on loan.

By the Bishop's Castle (Additional Capital) Certificate, 1866. the company was authorised to raise 90,000l. by preference shares or stock, and 30,0007. on loan.

29.-BLANE VALLEY.

Incorporated by 24 and 25 Vic., cap. 248 (6th August, 1861), to construct a line from Lennoxtown, on the Edinburgh and Glasgow, to Strathblane, with a branch to Lettermill, in the county of Stirling. Length, 84 miles. Capital, 51,000, in 107. shares, and 17,000%, on loan. Arrangements with North British, which subscribed 17,0007. Opened for goods on the 19th October, 1866, and for passengers on 1st July, 1867. By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 356 (5th July, 1855), the company was authorised to construct an extension to the Forth and Clyde. Length, 2 miles. Original capital restricted to 33,0001, in shares, and 11,000% on loan. New capital, 42,000l. in shares, with 14,000%. on loan. By certificate of the Board of Trade the period for completion of these works was extended to 5th July, 1870. These works, however, were authorised to be abandoned by 33 and 34 Vic., cap. 78 (20th June, 1870). C

REVENUE.-It was reported in September that the receipts for the half-year ending 31st July were 1,4981., showing an increase of 1641. After payment of working expenses and other charges, there was, with the balance from last half-year's account, an amount at the credit of net revenue of 4751., out of which a dividend for the halfyear at the rate of 3 per cent. per annum on the preference shares absorbed 453/., and left to next account 227.

It was also reported in September that the directors presented to Parliament a Bill for abandonment of the extension to the Forth and Clyde, and at the same time they endeavoured to make arrangements with road trustees and landowners with the view of procuring certain modifications on the works, and of obtaining the sanction of the Board of Trade thereto, so as to enable the company to construct the line at an expense coming within the funds available for the purpose. The attempt to carry through this modified scheme did not prove successful, and the Abandonment Bill had therefore been passed.

30.-BLYTH AND TYNE,

Incorporated by 16 Vic., cap. 122 (1852) for a line from Blyth, through a coal and mineral district, to Hayhole Tyne, for coal, and to Percy Main, on North Shields line of York Newcastle and Berwick, for passengers and goods. Length, 20 miles. The company also possess several coal staiths, &c.

By 17 Vic., cap. 172 (1953), the company was authorised to construct a branch from Seaton Delaval, Earsdon, for 1 mile of Tynemouth Branch, to Dairy-house; also a branch from Newsham and South Blyth, Earsdon, to York Newcastle and Berwick, near Morpeth. This branch (6 miles) was opened on 31st October, 1860.

By 20 and 21 Vic., cap. 114 (10th August, 1857), the company was authorised to make certain deviations and extensions. New capital, 110,000l., raised by preference, and is the amount of the estimated cost of new works, after deducting 23,000l. to be saved by the relinquishment of the Longhirst extension, the powers for the construction of which are repealed. The length of the Warkworth extension is 13 miles, and of the branch to Blyth Docks, 1 mile 1 furlong and 5 chains.

By 24 and 25 Vic., cap. 98 (28th June, 1861), the company was empowered to extend their main line to Newcastle, and to construct certain branches. Length, 25 miles. New capital, 210,0007. in shares at 5 per cent., and 70,000 on loan. Opened to Newcastle (9 miles) on 1st June, 1864. In operation, 34 miles.

By 27 and 28 Vic., cap. 244 (25th July, 1864), the company was authorised to raise new capital to the extent of 50,0001. in shares, and 16,0007. on loans, with an extension of time for three years for completion of certain works.

By 30 and 31 Vic., cap. 203 (15th August, 1867), the Blyth and Tyne obtained power to construct new lines, called the North Shields, the Camboise, the Walbottle, the Newbiggin, the Tynemouth branches, and the Warkworth extension. Length,
