210.-MIDLAND COUNTIES AND SHANNON JUNCTION. Incorporated by 24 and 25 Vic., cap. 246 (6th August, 1861), to construct a line from Clara, on the Great Southern and Western, to Meelick, on the Shannon. Length, 21 miles. Capital, 115,0007. in 107. shares, and 38,3007. on loan.

Powers are given in the Act to make arrangements with the Great Southern and Western "for the use, working, and management of so much of the undertaking as lies to the east of the Shannon."

By Act 29 and 30 Vic., cap. 182 (16th July, 1866), the company was authorised to purchase additional lands, and also to extend the time for purchasing lands to the 16th of July, 1868, and for completion of works to 16th July, 1869. Powers are conferred by the same Act to cancel 50,000. of original shares, and to issue in lieu thereof an equal amount of preference capital, bearing interest at the rate of 5 per

cent.

Accounts balanced to 30th June and 31st December. Meetings to be held in April or October in Banagher or Dublin.

Incorporated by 29 and 30 Vic., cap. 265 (23rd July, 1866), and being a union of the Lynn and Sutton Bridge and Spalding and Bourne.

The united capital of the company to consist of 213,000l. in 201. shares, and 71,000. on loan. Arrangements with Midland and Great Northern. By the same Act the Midland and Eastern was authorised to take a lease of the Norwich and Spalding, and also to amalgamate that company at a future period.

LYNN AND SUTTON BRIDGE.-Incorporated by 24 and 25 Vic.. cap. 245 (6th August, 1861), to construct a line from Lynn, on the East Anglian, to Sutton Bridge, on the Norwich and Spalding. Length, 9 miles and 43 chains. Capital, 100,000. in 20. shares: loans, 37,000l. Opened 1st March, 1865, and worked by Great Northern. By 26 and 27 Vic., cap. 193 (21st July, 1862), the company was relieved from certain onerous obligations in respect to building a new bridge at Sutton. By 27 and 28 Vic., cap. 229 (25th July, 1864), the use by the company of the Cross Keys Bridge, over the river Neve, was regulated. By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 194 (29th June, 1865), the company were permitted to execute certain works at Sutton, and to raise additional capital to the extent of 15,000l. in shares, and 5,000l. on mortgage. Also to attach a preference to unissued and cancelled shares.

SPALDING AND BOURNE.-Incorporated by 25 and 26 Vic., cap. 199 (29th July, 1862), to construct a line from Spalding, on the Great Northern, to Bourne. Length, 91⁄2 miles. Capital, 100,000/. in 20. shares; loans, 32,5007.

By 30 and 31 Vic., cap. 185 (12th August, 1867), certain agreements with the Midland and Great Northern were confirmed, by which these two companies agree to work the lines jointly, and to aid completion of the same by subscriptions towards the capital. The Midland may apply any amount it can spare from capital already authorised to be raised, while the Great Northern is permitted to create and issue new capital for the purpose of this Act to the extent of 24,000%. in shares, and 8,000. on loan.

The dividend for the half-year ending 31st December, 1869, was at the rate of 2 per cent. per annum.

Incorporated by 9 Vic., cap. 119 (21st July, 1845), for a line from Dublin to Mullingar, with a branch to Longford. In 1846 the scheme was extended to Athlone. In 1847 the company obtained power to continue the line to the port of Galway. By 16 Vic., cap. 137 (1852), further power was obtained to deviate the extension to Long ford, and for a branch to Cavan (24 miles), opened 8th February, 1856. The extension line from Mullingar to Longford was opened for public traffic on 8th November, 1855; the branch to the river Liffey on the 1st of April, 1864, length. 26 miles; from Castlebar to Westport, 11 miles. on the 29th January, 1866; and from Manulla to Foxford, 114 miles, on 1st May, 1868. Total in operation, 339 miles.

With this undertaking is also incorporated the "Royal Canal," running parallel with the railway from Dublin as far as Mullingar, whence it diverges to Longford. The Royal Canal (said to have cost the original proprietors 1,500,000.) was purchased under the Act of incorporation by this company for 298,0597.

By 20 and 21 Vic., cap. 77 (27th July, 1857), the company was authorised to make an extension to Sligo, with branches therefrom. New capital, 510,0001. in 251. shares (calls, 10 per cent.), and loans, 193,000. The length of the extension, commencing at the terminus of the existing railway at Longford, and terminating at the town of Sligo, is 57 miles; the length of the branch, commencing from the extension in Ballysadare, is 2 furlongs; and the length of the branch, commencing from the extension in Rathedmond and terminating near Sligo, is 4 furlongs. Opened from Longford to Sligo, December 3rd, 1862.

By 20 and 21 Vic., cap. 113 (10th August, 1857), the company was authorised to construct a line from Streamstown to Clara. New capital, 80,0007. in 257. shares, and loans, 26,000. Length, 7 miles. Opened 1st April, 1863.

By 22 and 23 Vic., cap. 53 (1st August, 1859), the company was authorised to construct a branch from Glasnevin to the river Liffey. Length, 3 miles. New capital, 50,000l. in 20. shares, and 16,000l. on loan. Opened 1st April, 1864. By the same Act power was given to raise 135,800l. to discharge debt due in respect of Royal Canal.

By 22 and 23 Vic., cap. 62 (1st August, 1859), the company was authorised to abandon a portion of its line between Longford and Boyle, and to construct a new line in substitution thereof.

By 28 Vic., cap. 40 (26th May, 1865), the capital of the company was defined at 2.750,000. in shares, 702,2001. by mortgage, and 500,0007. on loan from the Public Works, and subject to increase in event of the purchase of the Royal Canal being completed by 135,8001.

By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 210 (5th July, 1865), an arrangement was legalised with the baronies, in Roscominon and Galway, by which their contributions to the company in respect to deficiencies in revenue were to cease as from 28th October, 1870. By 29 Vic., cap. 34 (18th May, 1866), the company was authorised to acquire additional lands, and also to reduce the number of directors to nine, with ultimate power to still further reduce the number to six.

By 32 and 33 Vic., cap. 52 (24th June, 1869), the company was authorised to borrow the sum of 171,000l. wherewith to pay off the loan from the Public Works Loan Commissioners, which had been obtained to assist in carrying out the extension to Galway.

GRAND CANAL.-The lease of the tolls of the canal expired on 1st July, 1860, when the undertaking was handed back to the directors of that company. It is now worked in unison with the Great Southern and Midland Great Western, the lease by these companies having been withdrawn from Parliament last session only in conse quence of an inadequate scale of tolls having been insisted on by a committee of the Lords.

DUBLIN AND MEATH.-An amicable arrangement has been effected with this company, and a new and separate entrance into Dublin avoided.

GREAT NORTHERN AND WESTERN.-The Midland Great Western works this line, 83 miles.

DUBLIN AND DROGHEDA.-The directors, anxious to promote a good understanding with the Dublin and Drogheda, have entered into an arrangement by which the competing lines, between Navan and Dublin, may be worked so as to avoid undue competition.

REVENUE. The receipts for the half-year ending 31st December, 1869, amounted to 148,002; the expenditure to 80,4731.; and the interest on debentures and loans to 21,6984., leaving a balance of 45,831. To this was added 9,9197., surplus from preceding half-year, making the total 55,751., out of which the usual dividend at the rate of 5 per cent. on the preference shares, and at the rate of 34 per cent. on the consolidated stock, left a balance of 10,500.

The receipts for the half-year ending 30th June amounted to 123,180, against 115.961, showing an increase on the main line of 7,2191. The receipts from the traffic of the railway, the canal, and other sources amounted to 145,858, and the expenditure to 78,561, the interest on debentures, canal mortgage, and rent to 21,083, leaving a balance of 46,213. to which were added 10,5007., surplus from preceding half-year, making 56,7131. Dividend at the rate of 5 per cent. per annum on the preference stock, and at the rate of 3 on the consolidated stock, left a balance of 11,4631.

The revenue account of the railway from Athlone to Galway for the half-year ending 30th June showed that 16,5247. had been received and 15,8261. expended, leaving a balance of 6984 to meet the interest at 3 per cent. per annum on 470,000. expended on that portion of the railway, amounting to 8,2251. for the half-year, of which amount the baronies would have to provide 7,527, to make up with the 6981. the full amount of interest.

It was also reported in September that the company would, on 1st November, commence to work the Great Northern and Western under the terms of the lease sanctioned by Parliament. The working agreement entered into with the Athenry and Tuam in 186) expired on the 28th of October. The lease in the ten years had entailed a loss of 30,0001, on the company.

213.-MIDLAND AND SOUTH WESTERN JUNCTION. Incorporated by 27 and 28 Vic., cap. 190 (14th July, 1864), to construct a line from the North and South Western Junction, at Acton, to the London Extension of the Midland at Hendon. Length, 4 miles. Capital, 90,000 in 10%. shares, 53,0001. of which have already (September, 1867), been paid up, and 30,000 on loan. Vested in the Midland at an annual rental of 6,000l. per annum. Opened 1st October, 1868.

It was reported in September that the rent payable by the Midland had been punctually received as it became due, and distributed amongst the shareholders without reduction. The directors had anticipated that their claim against the Midland would have been settled, but there are two or three matters outstanding which prevented them closing the capital account.

Incorporated by 22 and 23 Vic., cap. 63 (1st August, 1859), to construct a line from Llanidloes to Newbridge. Several deviations have since been authorised by various Acts of Parliament, as well as additional capital. In operation, 523 miles. Opened 1st September, 1864.

By 27 and 28 Vic., cap. 142 (30th June, 1864), the Mid-Wales was authorised to construct a line to join the Central Wales. Length, 17 chains. Also to lease the line to Messrs. Watson and Overend. New capital, 90,0007. in shares, and 30,000%. on loan.

By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 159 (29th June, 1865), the company was authorised to construct a line to communicate with the Central Wales. Length, 9 miles. New capital, 120,0007. in shares, and 40,0007. on loan.

By 28 and 29 Vic., cap. 371 (5th July, 1865), the company was authorised to construct extensions to the Manchester and Milford. Length, 26 miles. Capital, 380,0007. in shares, and 126,5007. on loan.

By 29 and 30 Vic., cap. 210 (16th July, 1866), the company acquired powers to raise new capital to the extent of 200,0007. in shares, and 66,0007. on loan.

By 32 and 33 Vic., cap. 113 (12th July, 1869), the company obtained a revival and extension of time in which to construct the North Western Extensions authorised by Act of 1865 until 12th July, 1873; and also power to abandon the works authorised by Act of 1864 and the Eastern Extensions of 1865. Running powers over part of Neath and Brecon, and agreements in respect to use of joint station at Brecon.

REVENUE. The receipts for the half-year ending 31st December, 1869, amounted to 14,9687., being an increase of 1,1147. over the corresponding period of 1868. chairman said the cost of working the traffic might be taken at 9,5007., and he had every reason for believing the improvement in the receipts would be permanent.

The receipts for the half-year ending 30th June showed 14,6321. had been received, and 9,6967. expended, leaving a balance of 4,9351. On this occasion it was reported that the passenger traffic did not improve, in consequence of not having a through route between North and South Wales.
