Established for the purpose of extending, by submarine cables, the telegraph system of British India, now terminating at Point de Galle, in the Island of Ceylon, to the Straits Settlements, and to Australia and China.

The cables were constructed and laid by the India-rubber, Gutta Percha, and Telegraph Works Company (Limited), for 325,000.

511.-INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL.

Incorporated under "The Companies' Act, 1862," by which the liability of each shareholder is limited to the amount of his subscription. Capital, 1,500,000%. in 150,000 shares of 101. each.

It was reported in January that the securities had, as heretofore, been valued at the lowest market prices on 31st December, 1869. The net balance of available profits, after deducting all charges, amounted to 42,056., out of which a dividend was declared at the rate of 5 per cent. per annum, free of income-tax, and the balance of 4,5561. carried to next account. Half of the proposed dividend having been paid by way of interim interest in July last, the dividend payable would be at the rate of 28. 6d. per share. The balance sheet to 31st December showed totals on both sides of 1,049,564. The paid-up capital amounted to 750,000l., the amount due on deposits, &c., to 237,5087., the reserve fund to 20,000l., and the credit to profit and loss account to 42,0567.

The report for the 31st December, 1870, recommended a dividend of 2s. 6d. per share, or at the rate of 5 per cent. per annum, which left 5,2781, to be carried forward. The dividend at the corresponding date of 1870, was also at the rate of 5 per cent., the balance then carried forward being 4,5551. The securities held by the company are valued at the lowest market price on 31st December, 1869.

513.-LAND AND SEA TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION. Capital, 500,000, in 100,000 shares of 57. each. Formed for the purpose of constructing and maintaining land and sea telegraph lines. It will start unfettered by the enormous annual and other incumbrances, and unproductive capital which have prevented existing companies from supplying efficient lines of telegraphy except at high prices.

The works for insulation of the conducting wires will embrace all the most recent improvements, and will be carried out by Walter Hancock, Esq., C.E., whose experience and service in this department of telegraphy are so well known, and with whom the company propose to enter into a contract for the necessary machinery. 514-LIVERPOOL TRAMWAYS.

Incorporated by 31 and 32 Vic., cap. 167 (31st July, 1868), to construct certain tramways in Liverpool. Length, 9 miles. Capital, 120,000. in 107. shares and 40,000. on loan.

By 33 and 34 Vic., cap. 176 (10th August, 1870), the company was authorised to construct new street tramways to Toxteth Park. Length, in single lines, 13 mile. New capital, 12,0007. in 107. shares, preferred and deferred, and 3,0007. on loan.

Application is being made to the Board of Trade under "The Tramways Act, 1870," by a "street" company, for provisional order authorising construction of tramways within the borough and parish of Liverpool; also on quays of Mersey Docks; and in the townships of Everton, West Derby, and Wavertree; running powers over the tramways of the Liverpool tramways; powers affecting corporation of Liverpool, and other local authorities. It may also be mentioned that the Town Council of Liverpool has approved of a recommendation for the purchase of the lines of tramway which are being formed between the town and its suburbs.

515.-LONDON FINANCIAL.

Capital subscribed, 2,000,000l.; paid-up, 1,178,4877. It was reported in July, 1870, that the liabilities amounted to 179,6007; but, deducting the cash balances of bankers, 11,6957, they would be reduced to 167,9004, being 47,000. less than at the half-yearly meeting in January. The association held full paid-up securities of undertakings in the United Kingdom to the nominal amount of 2,159,7157., viz.:-debentures, 233,7657. debenture stock, 193,5207; Lloyd's bonds, 183,5407; preference shares, 724,0207.; and ordinary shares, 824,870.

It was reported in February that the liabilities amounted to 167,5561.; but, deducting the cash at the bankers, viz., 12,5607., they would be reduced to 154,9957., being about 13,000l. less than at the July half-yearly meeting, or a total reduction of liabilities during the year of 60,000l. This is without reckoning the bills receivable in hand, representing 57,5007. The accrued or accumulated interest amounted to about 100,000, and 8,7207. had been received during the six months in 5 per cent. debenture stock under Parliamentary sanction. The association holds fully paid-up securities upon undertakings in the United Kingdom to the nominal extent of 2,182,1751., spread over about twenty railways and other undertakings.

517.-LONDON TRAMWAYS.

Formed under limited liability with a capital of 250,000%. in shares of 10%, for the purpose of consolidating the Metropolitan Street and the Pimlico Peckham and Greenwich Street. The former has constructed lines from Brixton and Clapham to near Westminster Bridge, and received 97,500l. in shares of the consolidated undertaking for a like number of its own shares; and the second company is to be paid its actual outlay for so much of its authorised lines as are yet constructed-namely, the first section of the Greenwich line from Blackheath Hill to New Cross, and part of the The remaining balance of share capital, with continuation to East Greenwich. 70,000%. of debenture capital, will, it is stated, be sufficient for the completion of the entire schemes, and to leave an adequate margin for working capital. The original shareholders are to be allowed one-half of all profits beyond 6 per cent. per annum that may be realised by the consolidated company. The powers of this company under the Acts of Parliament obtained will comprise 25 miles of street, partly single, but principally double lines.

The object of the company is to establish and work a direct line of telegraph between Marseilles, Algeria, and Malta, in accordance with a concession granted by the French Government, under Imperial decree.

The company's lines will afford to the traffic between France, Egypt, India, the French colony of Cochin China, China, and Australia (which would otherwise have to traverse 1,300 miles of land line through Italy), the same reliable communication with those places as Great Britain will possess by means of the Falmouth, Gibraltar, and Malta Telegraph.

It was reported in August, 1869, that an interim dividend at the rate of 10 per cent. per annum had been declared out of the profits of the half-year ending December. Although the profits of the year show an excess of the amount proposed to be divided, the directors in the face of a continued depresed state of trade, could only recommend the payment of a similar dividend for the half-year ending 30th June.

Subscribed capital, 4,000,0007.; paid up, 797,880.; reserve fund, 497,880. The gross profit for the half-year ending 30th June amounted to 110,250%., and that after providing for current expenditure, directors' and auditors' remuneration, and reserving 35,9591. for rebate of interest on bills not due, there remained, with the balance of 2,2641. from previous account, the sum of 66,3271., out of which was distributed 63,8304 in the payment of a dividend at the rate of 16 per cent. per annum, free of income-tax, carrying forward 2,4971. to next account.

The report for 31st December, 1870, showed an available total of 69,958., including previous balance of 2,4977. Dividend at the rate of 17 per cent. per annum, absorbed 67,8194., and left 2,1897. to be carried forward.
