I

SAW the green of autumn leaf turn gold scarce over night,
Her sister leaves turn red and brown, a vivid, colorous sight.
Methought the earth was glorious then all garbed in bright

array,

I did not see that just beyond would come a grayer day,
When earth then drear

Would cease to cheer

And joy fly swift away.

II.

I saw the days of winter come, bewitching, cold and keen,
The softly falling winter snow a silvery, silken sheen.

But then the sleet beat fast and hard against the panes of light,

The sunshine all had disappeared, the twilight turned to night. And everywhere

The bitter air

Gave forth a chill and blight.

III.

I felt the piercing winds of March invading every nook,

I saw the stalwart, bare-limbed trees, the silent, ice-bound brook. Then nature smiled a glad surprise and, summoning all her

powers,

Burst into radiance and to life from all her sleeping hours,

And gave to earth

A glad rebirth,

And brought the springtime flowers.

Elkanah East Taylor.
