Evening damps begin to fall,
Evening shadows are displayed;
Round me, o'er me, everywhere,
All the sky is grand with clouds,
And athwart the evening air

Wheel the swallows home in crowds,

The Golden Legend-4.

Scattered like dust and leaves, when the mighty blasts

of October

Seize them, and whirl them aloft.

Evangeline-Introduction.

Thou comest, Autumn, heralded by the rain,
With banners, by great gales incessant fanned,
Brighter than brightest silks of Samarcand,
Thou standest, like imperial Charlemagne,
Upon thy bridge of gold; thy royal hand
Outstretched with benedictions o'er the land,
And following thee, in thy ovation splendid,
Thine almoner, the wind, scatters the golden leaves !
Sonnet-Autumn.

O what a glory doth this world put on For him who, with a fervent heart goes forth Under the bright and glorious sky, and looks On duties well performed, and days well spent! For him the wind, ay, and the yellow leaves, Shall have a voice, and give him eloquent teachings.

Autumn.

Not alone in Spring's armorial bearing,
And in Summer's green emblazoned field,
But in arms of brave old Autumn's wearing,
In the centre of his brazen shield.

In the cottage of the rudest peasant,

In ancestral homes, whose crumbling towers, Speaking of the Past unto the Present,

Tell us of the ancient Game of Flowers.

October 3.

Flowers.

Peace! Peace! Orestes-like I breathe this prayer! Descend with broad-winged flight,

The welcome, the thrice-prayed for, the most fair,

The best-beloved Night!

Hymn to the Night.

Toil comes with the morning,

And rest with the night.

Curfew.

October 3.

I saw the branches of the trees
Bend down thy touch to meet,
The clover-blossoms in the grass
Rise up to kiss thy feet.

A Gleam of Sunshine.

O holy trust! O endless sense of rest!

Like the beloved John,

To lay his head upon the Saviour's breast,

And thus to journey on."

Hymn-" For my Brother's Ordination.”

October 5.

This is the cry

Of souls, that high,

On toiling, beating pinions fly,

Seeking a warmer clime.

From their distant flight
Through realms of light,

It falls into our world of night,

With the murmuring sound of rhyme.

October 6.

Birds of Passage.

When she had passed, it seemed
Like the ceasing of exquisite music.

Evangeline-Part 1, sec. 1.

So long as you are innocent, fear nothing,

No one can harm you!
