PREFACE

BY THE AUTHOR OF

"MEMORIALS OF CAPTAIN HEDLEY VICARS," &c.

A MOTTO for this book might well be chosen from the inspired words of the Apostle Paul, "That I may know JESUS, and the power of His resurrection.” For the object of the author is to persuade those who have looked upon Him as their dying Saviour, bearing their sins in His own body on the Cross, to look constantly to Him as their living Saviour; risen and living, to impart to them a resurrection power, that they may rise above all the lingering remains of the death in sin, to walk with Him in newness of life.

It is owing to the joy with which I have drawn water out of this well of salvation, living water poured into it by the Lord and Giver, that I venture now to introduce it to English Christians.

America has done much for us of late; or rather, through her welcome instrumentality, GOD has done great things for us, whereof we are glad.

The heart of Christian England has glowed, and

her spirit has been stirred within her to fresh earnestness in prayer for the outpouring of God's Holy Spirit, by the various records of His glorious work in the American Revival,—a revival of a religion of love and fervour in the heart, and of holiness and power in the life; spreading, like the flood of light with the rising of the sun, from the shores of the Atlantic to the wild woods of the West.

It was when the storm of adversity burst upon that country in the autumn of 1857, threatening almost the wreck of national prosperity, that JESUS himself drew nigh, and said, “Peace, be still." And the great calm of an Eternal Peace settled down upon hundreds of thousands of troubled souls.

The life-breath has been wafted over those waters to us; and each movement of the air around us which it has stirred is hailed with thankfulness and hope. Yet are we waiting, praying, longing till that wind that bloweth where it listeth come direct from heaven to our own country.

"Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon our garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let our beloved come into His garden, and eat His pleasant fruits,” - even the pleasant "fruits of the Spirit-love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance."
