A FIRST SKETCH OF ENGLISH

LITERATURE,

From the Earliest Period to the Present Time.

BY

PROF. HENRY MORLEY.

Crown 8vo, 912 pp., cloth.

"Full of admirable matter, carefully and consecutively arranged, simple and manly in style, accurate in detail, judicious and appreciative in criticism, it forms a summary of special value to the student, and which every reader may consult with advantage.”—Spectator.

"A most useful book of reference for students grateful to Professor Morley for his interesting and lively book, which will kindle in students that enthusiasm for literature and love of all that is noble and true which the professor so strongly possesses."—Athenæum.

"To call a stout volume of nearly a thousand pages a 'First Sketch,' certainly shows no overweening pretension on the part of the author, and it is rather unfair to the book thus designated. Of all the recent histories of English literature it is really the most elaborate we know. Professor Morley has given us the best history of English literature which has yet appeared. The book is one we cannot too strongly recommend to all students of English.”—Educational Times.

"The history and literature of a country go hand and hand, and the connection between them is clearly seen and fully pointed out by Professor Morley. Much careful labour has been expended on this 'Sketch,' and the thoroughness and accurate knowledge displayed in the work mark it off very distinctly from the many volumes of a somewhat similar character which have appeared of late years."--Pall Mall Gazette.

'In the course of the work almost every English author of note, and many who are not so well known, are introduced to the reader, and accounts are given of them. It is not easy to see how a student of English literature could have or desire to have a book which would be of more assistance to him in studies than this. It is never wearisome, it is always clear, and appears to be throughout most accurate. The work will not fail to have a large number of admirers."-Scotsman.

"In this interesting manual Professor Morley attempts something like a comprehensive history of English literature from the earliest period to our own time. His plan includes a record of the influence of the civil on the literary history, and of the direct relation between different periods. The style is vigorous and clear, the criticism thoughtful and suggestive."Manchester Examiner.

lives; but even they are for us but "stepping stones to higher things." We cannot, and we need not, repeat the work of Cadmon, of Chaucer, of Spenser, or of Milton. our nineteenth century poetess says:

"The past is past,

God lives, and lifts his glorious mornings up

Before the eyes of men awake at last.

We hurry onward to extinguish hell

With our fresh souls, our younger hope, and God's
Maturity of purpose. Soon shall we

Die also! And that then our periods

Of Life may round themselves to memory

As smoothly, as on our graves the burial sods,
We must now look to it to excel as ye,

And bear our age as far, unlimited
By the last landmark, so to be invoked

By future generations as their Dead."

Here we leave the story of our English Literature, lifting up our hearts in thanks to God for its glorious heritage, and setting forth with the courage that springs from faith to carry on the new work of a new day.
