Upon these Frats; Christmas Day, the Epiphany, St Matthias, Easter Day, Ascenun Day, Whit-Sunday, St. John Baptist, St. James, St. Bartholomew, St. Matthew, B. Simon and St. Jude, St Andrew, and apan Trinity Sunday, shall be sang said at Morning Prayer, instead of the Apostes Creed, this Confession of our Christian Farth, commonly caled, The Creed of St. Athanasius; by the Minifler and Pergle, standing.

WHOJOEVER Will be saved : before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith.

Which Faith, except every one do keep whole and undefiled: without doubt he shall (b) perish everlastingly.

And the Catholic Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;

Neither confounding the Persons: nor dividing the Substance.

For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son: and another of the Holy Ghost.

But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one: the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal.

Such as the Father is, such is the Son and such is the Holy

Ghost.

(a) "St Athanasius." It is generally understood that this Creed was not written until after the time of Athanasius, who died A.D. 373. See 2 Bp. Tomline's Theology, 219.

(b)" Perish," see note infra on "can"not be saved."

(c) "Not three." Sabellius, and some of his predecessors, charged the Church with acknowledging three Gods. This answers that charge.

(d) "The Son is God." The Son whom Isaiah foretold the Virgin was to conceive, Isaiah vii. 14. was to be called "Immanuel, "that is, God with us." One of the names assigned him, Isaiah ix. 6. is "The "mighty God." St. John says, "The "Word (i e. that Word which "was "made flesh, and dwelt among us," (John i. 14.) was God," John i. 1. St. Paul speaks of Christ, Rom. ix. 5. as

The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate and the Holy Ghost

uncreate.

The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible: and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible.

The Father eternal, the Son eternal: and the Holy Ghost eternal;

And yet they are not (c) three eternals: but one eternal.

As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated: but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible.

So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty : and the Holy Ghost Almighty; Almighties: but one Almighty. And yet they are not three

So the Father is God, the Son

is (d) God: and the Holy Ghost is (e) God;

66 over all, God blessed for ever." In Col. ii. 9. he says, that “in him (viz. "Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of "the Godhead bodily;" and 1 Tim. iii. 16. “ God was manifest in the "flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of "angels, preached unto the Gentiles, "believed on in the world, received up "into glory." And in Rev.i, 11. 17, 18. "He that liveth and was dead, and is " alive for evermore, and hath the keys " of hell and death," says of himself, "I "am Alpha and Omega, I am the "first and the last," which are the proper appellations of God. See also Isaiah xli 4.-xliv. 6.—xlvii. 12. also Bp.Tomline's Theology, 100 to 154, and Dr. Waterland's Moyer's Sermons. (e)" Holy Ghost is God", See 2 Bp. Tomline's Theology, 84 to 98, and 176 to 187.

And yet they are not three Gods but one God.

So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord and the Holy Ghost Lord;

And yet not three Lords: but one Lord.

For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord;

So are we forbidden by the Catholic Religion: to say, There be three Gods, or three Lords.

The Father is made of none: neither created, nor begotten.

The Son is of the Father alone: not made, nor created, but begotten.

The Holy Ghost is of the Father, and of the Son neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.

So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.

And in this Trinity none is afore, or after other: none is greater, or less than another;

But the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and coequal.

So that in all things, as is aforesaid the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity, is to be worshipped.

He therefore that will be saved: must thus think of the Trinity.

Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation: that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man;

God, of the Substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds: and Man, of the (ƒ) Substance of his Mother, born in the world;

Perfect (g) God, and Perfect Man of a reasonable soul, and human flesh subsisting;

Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead and inferior to the Father, as touching his Manhood.

Who although he be God and Man yet he is not (h) two, but one Christ;

One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh: but by taking of the Manhood into God;

One altogether; not by confusion of Substance: but by unity of Person.

For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man: so God and Man is one Christ;

Whosuffered for our salvation: descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead;

a created God: God in office only, not in nature: an imperfect God. It is in answer to them, therefore, that he is here described as "perfect God." Anon. 50.

(b)" Not two." The Apollinarians urged, because of the two natures of Christ, that the Church asserted two Christs, a divine Christ as to one nature, and a human Christ as to the other: this denies that conclusion. Anon. 51.

Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Then the Minister, Clerks, and People shall say the Lord's Prayer with a loud voice.

OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Then the Priest, standing up, shall say, O Lord, shew thy mercy upon

us;

Answ. And grant us thy salvation.

Priest. O Lord, save the

King;

Answ. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Priest. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness;

Answ. And make thy chosen people joyful.

Priest. O Lord, save thy people;

Answ. And bless thine inheritance.

Priest. Give peace in our time, O Lord;

Answ. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

Priest. O God, make clean our hearts within us.

Answ. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

Then shall follow three Colleas; the first
of the Day, and then
IN THE MORNING,
For Peace.

O GOD, who art the author of peace, and lover of concord, in
