Gibeon (c), and thou moon, in the valley of Ajalon." 13. And the sun stood still, nd the moon stayed, until the people had venged themselves upon their enemies.

not this written in the book of Jasher? > the sun stood still in the midst of eaven, and hasted not to go down bout a whole day. 14. And there was ɔ day like that, before it or after it, that e LORD hearkened unto the voice of a an: for the LORD fought for Israel. 5. And Joshua returned, and all Israel ith him, unto the camp to (d) Gilgal. 5. But these five kings fled, and hid themelves in a cave at Makkedah. 17. And was told Joshua, saying, the five kings re found hid in a cave at Makkedah. 8. And Joshua said, "Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them. 19. And stay you not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them, suffer them not to enter into their cities for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand." 20. And came to pass when Joshua and the chilren of Israel had made an end of slaying nem with a very great slaughter till they vere consumed, that the rest which renained of them entered into fenced cities.

1. And all the people returned to the hamp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: one moved his tongue against any of the hildren of Israel. 22. Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave." 23. And they did so, and rought forth those five kings unto him

out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24. And it came to pass when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war, which went with him, "Come near, put your "feet upon the necks of these kings." And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. 25. And Joshua said unto them, "Fear not nor be dis"mayed, be strong and of good courage: "for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.” 26. And afterwards Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. 27. And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this (e) very day. 28. And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them and all the souls that were therein, he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah, as he did unto the king (f) of Jericho. 29. Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30. And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel, and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were

The beginning of the verse states that Joshua addressed himself to the Lord, and verse 14. that the Lord hearkened, &c. : and would it not have been presumptuous, without God's command or permission, to have thus addressed the sun and moon?

(d) v. 15. is probably inserted here by mistake: it is not in the Vatican or Alexandrine

therein he let none remain in it, but did unto the king thereof, as he did unto the king of Jericho. 31. And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it. 32. And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33. Then Horam king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. 34. And from Lachish, Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him, and they encamped against it, and fought against it. 35. And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. 36. And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron, and they fought against it. 37. And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, (g) and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein: he left none remaining (according to all that he had done to Eglon) but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein. 38. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him to Debir, and fought against it. 39. And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein, he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof, as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king. 40. So Joshua

smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. 41. And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea, even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon, 42. And all these kings, and their land did Joshua take at one time: because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. 43. And Joshua returned, and i Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilg

And she sent (u) and called Barak the son of Abiroam, out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, "Hath "not the LORD God of Israel commanded, "saying, "Go and draw toward mount Ta"bor, and take with thee ten thousand men "of the children of Naphtali and of the "children of Zebulun? 7. And I will draw "unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the "captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots "and his multitude; and I will deliver "him into thine hand." 8. And Barak said unto her, "If thou wilt go with me, "then I will go: but if thou wilt not go "with me, then I will not go." 9. And she said, "I will surely go with thee: "notwithstanding the journey that thou "takest, shall not be for thine honour; "for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the "hand of a woman." And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10. And Parak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him. 11. Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of (x) Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh. 12. And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor. 13. And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon. 14. And Deborah said unto Barak, “Up; "for this is the day in which the LORD "hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: " is not the LORD gone out before thee ?" Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18. And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, "Tum "in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not And when he had turned in unto her in the tent, she covered him with a mant 19. Then Jael Heber's wife took a ( of the tent, and took an hammer in hand, and went softly unto him, smote the nail into his temples, and fix ened it into the ground: (for he was fast asleep and weary). So he died. 22. And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jal came out to meet him, and said unto him, "Come, and I will shew thee the man "whom thou seekest." And when be came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples. 23.50 God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan, before the children of Israel. 24.
