2945. [THE FOUNDATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE, BY John Scot, Notar. Pub.]. Consisting of a short account of the University, of each of the 16 Colleges with a list of the Master & Fellows at March 25, 1617, Founders of the Schools, library, magistrates & officers, with 53 coats of arms blazoned, 26 leaves of the original work, with two in the handwriting of Thomas Baker to make up for leaves wanting in this copy. Fcap. Fo., loose in the old calf covers.

c. 1618. £6. 68.

This copy, which belonged to Thomas Baker, has no title page & wants the second half of the history of the University, which however is supplied by Baker from another copy. The copies were executed at different times between 1617 & 1621, the date to which each was made up being in some cases stated on the title page-There is one in Emmanuel College 1617, one in Jesus 1618, & one in the British Museum 1621. Of the work Mr. H. A. Woodham in his "Heraldry" of the University and Colleges thus speaks: "At the head of each section are two "coats, one exhibiting the bearings of the College therein treated of, & the other "apparently intended to give those of its founder. All the family shields of the "University Officers are likewise given, impaling, where necessary, those of "their office: the whole displaying much scientific accuracy & great pictorial 'beauty."

These copies of returns sent to the House of Commons in February 164 were made by the late Mr. J. E. Bailey. This protestation or declaration to defend the protestant religion against Popish innovation, his Majesty's person honour & estate, the power & privileges of Parliament, the rights and liberties of the Subject & the Union of the three Kingdoms, was made by the House of Commons May 3, 1641. It was sent to the Corporation of Cambridge by Oliver Cromwell & John Lowry their representatives, and signed May 11. It was sent to the two Universities in the following February. The returns give what appears to be a complete list of the members of each college at the time, &, in the case of Cambridge, of all the College Servants, showing those who took the protestation & also those who did not, whether from "absense, nonage, sickness,
