Three Countrymen are entering the room, the first with a bag, and these may be coming to pay their rents, the lower figure, writing, being the Bursar, and that above being the Provost. This and the previous plate refer to an edict against Dinners at Taverns. We can find no special edict in the year 1785, but in the Excerpta e Statutis issued in that year, regulations "Against resorting to taverns," dated 1728 & 1750, appear. Probably it was printed with a view to enforcing these regulations. In a pamphlet published in 1788 entitled Remarks on the Enormous Expence in the Education of Young Men in the University of Cambridge (see ante No. 1331) the following sentence occurs:-"It is true indeed, that some time ago, I believe "about the end of the year 1785, there was a faint attempt made to prevent the young men in Statu Pupillari giving Dinners...but...they were young men of "fashion and it was connived at."
