Orange Road.

[Petitioned for by the County Commissioners.]

This is a part of the main east and west way in the northern part of the State. Other portions of the same road have been mentioned under the head of Shelburne, Westminster and Fitchburg roads. One mile has been laid out, the hardened part of the way to be fifteen feet in width. No work has as yet been done. The town of Orange is the The maximum grade is 5 per cent.

COUNTY OF BERKSHIRE.

Pittsfield Road.

[Petitioned for by the County Commissioners.]

This is a part of the east and west way through the central portion of the State. Other sections of the way have been mentioned in describing the Leicester, Westfield and Russell roads. It extends from near Pittsfield toward the State line. One mile has been laid out, the hardened way to be of trap rock from the West Springfield quarries, and fifteen feet wide. Nearly one-half mile of this road is completed. The city of Pittsfield took the contract. The maximum grade is 4.25 per cent.

Lee Road.

[Petitioned for by the County Commissioners.]

This is a part of the road which connects the towns of Lee, Tyringham and Becket with the way up the Westfield valley. It will also connect with the east and west way which may in time be forced along the southern portion of the State. One mile has been laid out, the macadam to be 21 feet wide in the village, a distance of 770 feet, the remainder to be 15 feet wide. The material used will be from the neighboring ledges of quartzite. Thirty-three hundred feet of this road has been graded and about one-fourth of a mile covered with broken stone. The town of Lee is the contractor. The maximum grade is 2 per cent.

Great Barrington Road.

[Petitioned for by the County Commissioners.]

This is a portion of the north and south road through the Housatonic valley. One mile has been laid out, the material to be used on the roadway to be trap rock from the quarries at Meriden, Conn. Twenty-six hundred feet of the road is to have a hardened way 18 feet wide, the remainder to have a width of 15 feet. This road is about half finished. The town of Great Barrington has taken the contract. maximum grade is 3.60 per cent.

North Adams Road.

This is a portion of the northern, east and west road of the State. Other portions of this way are noted under Fitchburg, Westminster, Orange and Shelburne. A section of this road has been contracted for, the hardened way to be 18 feet in width, and the material trap rock from the Waltham quarries. Work has not yet been begun. The town of North Adams is the contractor. The maximum grade is 2.50 per cent.

The broken stone from these quarries is "trap," with the exception of Cohasset and Rockport, where a hard granite rock is used. Part of the Waltham supply is a hard red granite, suitable for the lower layer of any road and for all the layers on light-traffic roads.

All the broken stone used on State roads is separated by a revolving screen into three grades, as follows:

From two and one-half to one and one-quarter inches.
From one and one-quarter to one-half inch.

From one-half inch to the dust.
