Table of Lessons, &c. THE Lessons for Morning and Evening Service on the Lord's Day form a two-years' course. The First Lesson in the Morning Service is selected from the historical books of the Old Testament, on the principle of conveying an outline of the sacred history; and the First Lesson in the Evening Service is taken from the prophetical writings, the order of the canon being followed throughout. The Second Lesson combines portions of the gospels and epistles. It will be observed that the greater part of the New Testament is thus read yearly on the Lord's Day-the gospel history being harmonised so as to admit of being completed within the year; while the portions, whether of gospels or epistles, necessarily omitted one year, are introduced, so far as possible, in the year following. 4 In the "Table of Lessons for a Third Service," the First Lesson is chosen principally with reference to the Sunday Morning Old Testament Lesson, and the Second Lesson is taken from the gospels in their canonical order. The Table for the First Year is to be used in those years of which the number is odd, as 1877-79, &c.; the Table for the Second Year in those of which the number is even, as 187880, &c. When Psalms and Lessons are specified in the "Table of Lessons, &c., for Special Services," as proper for a special occasion, the Psalms and Lessons of ordinary course are then to be omitted. It is intended, when several Psalms are set down, that a selection should be made at the discretion of the Minister. According to the "Table of Daily Lessons," the Old Testament is read through once, (with the exception of certain parts omitted as less suitable), and the New Testament twice, every year. When a Psalm or Lesson is described as extending "to" a verse, it is to be understood that the verse specified is excluded. * When it is necessary to shorten the service, one of the New Testament Lessons may be omitted. 19 to v. 25 19, V. 25 " 14 ་་ Luke 24, V. 13 to v. 36 John 20, V. 19 to 31 33 and 34 to v. 9 ་་ 21 1124, V. 4, to 25, V. 23 "126, V. 30, and 27 or Deut. 4 to v. 32, or 4, 6 or 29,and 30, V. 15 Luke 14 "1 17, V. 20 Matt. 25 to v. 31 15, V. 18, to 16, V. 5 3 Matt. 26, v. 57 John 18, v. 28, to v. 39 2 "1 I |
