The same shall include the face of the "division wall" to the under side of the roof and monitor peak.

Face brick to be returned on all windows and door jambs and around all pilasters and breaks in walls, showing no joint between common brick and face-brick. Face-brick to be bonded by heading courses at every sixth course.

Joints not to exceed 3/32 in. and pointed with cement of color as the architect shall direct. All face-work to be cleaned on completion and left free from defect.

(0) Ventilating Flues.-Build in walls where required by the Engineer fourteen (14) "fire-clay flue linings" with openings where indicated, each opening to be provided with cast iron frames and full register vents.

Each tile to be set straight and plumb with a full mortar bed, with each joint neatly struck.

(p) Partitions, Etc.-Where columns, beams or girders stand free or are exposed they shall be covered with fire-proof blocks or material laid on galvanized wire lath.

Where partitions are indicated these shall be constructed with fire-clay tile block or hollow concrete block, each partition to have the section called for by the drawings and where necessary to stiffen the partitions the Contractor shall furnish all necessary angles, tees or other iron, proportioned and spaced in a manner satisfactory to the Engineer.

All tile to be set with firm bed of mortar, each tile bonded and set straight, plumb and true.

(q) Exterior Face-Brick.-All face-brick required on the front and each side elevation shall be of selected first quality pressed brick, as basis of estimate "mottled brown" shall govern for color. All brick in connection with arches shall be radial.

The face of the rear wall shall be finished with hard burned merchantable brick laid first class trowel work.

Where panels are shown to be formed with brick, moulded brick shall be used.

Face brick are to be gauged, squared and selected, perfect in form, no blistered or "off colored" brick to be used.

All bricks laid to run their full natural length and in no case shall bats be used.

All brick to be laid with plumb bond, in a full bed of mortar, joints not to exceed 3/16 in. each neatly struck.

Every sixth course to be bonded with wall binders galvanized or secret headers as the case may be. The face of rear wall is to be struck jointed and left to receive paint.

(r) Remaining Brick.-All backing for stone work or face brick together with the division wall shall be of selected first quality merchantable brick, laid first class trowel work. None but careful and skilful brick layers shall be employed. All brick to be clean and thoroughy wet just before being laid, unless otherwise especially directed. Every brick to be laid with a push joint by placing sufficient mortar on the bed and forcing the brick into it in such a manner as to thoroughly fill every joint, whether on the bottom, side or end of the brick, with mortar. The joints shall be as nearly as possible of uniform thickness not exceeding 3/8 in. All bricks used shall be of uniform texture, hard-burned, entirely through, free from lime or other impurities. The face brick in the boiler room including those on the rear elevation, are to be culled, of uniform size, and such brick are to have smooth surfaces and straight angles, free from spalls or other defects.

Broken brick must not be brought on the ground, and such as are broken afterwards in handling shall be used only in making closures or as shall be otherwise specially directed.

Brick work is not to be laid in freezing weather, unless otherwise directed by the Engineer, when heating or other provisions are to be employed to prevent damage by frost. All brick are to be clean and free from snow and ice before laying.

If mortar for the upper courses should become frozen, the courses are to be taken down and the brick thoroughly cleaned before being relaid.

All walls to be built perfectly true, level and straight to the proper dimensions, and to a true line from one end to the other, every sixth course to be a heading course.

(s) Backing.-The mason shall back behind all stone work with hard-burned brick and build in all anchors, level up all brick backing to receive the next course of stone and follow the setter during the setting of each course throughout the work. Protect the top of all new work with tar paper and board covers over night or until such time as the new work is ready to continue. Also protect all face-work during freezing weather with canvas coverings.

Provide board protection, also heavy wire netting on the outside of all scaffolds at the time of laying face brick.

(t) Arches. Turn relieving arches over all openings in the brick work, each arch to be in row lock courses the height shown in section.

(u) Mortar & Staging.-All scaffolding, ladders, planking, mortar boxes, hods, hod elevators, tool houses, and other utensils necessary are to be furnished in sufficient quantities to complete the work with all due diligence and without unnecessary delay.

Style "D" mortar is to be used in connection with all brick work except face brick.

Style "C" mortar, mixed with white sand, is to be used for face brick, adding four (4) shovelfuls

of lime putty to one (1) barrel of cement. All mortar to have sand and cement measured for each batch.

Mortar to be mixed on a wood platform with plank sides and kept free from dirt and rubbish of every kind.

(v) Water Proofing.-All water proofing required below the starting line hereinbefore described for "masonry" shall be considered a part of the "foundation work".

The mason shall treat the inside of all brick walls not hereinbefore specified to be exposed "face work", with a most thorough coating (not merely brushed on) of "Universal Damp Resisting Paint" or other material equal thereto. This material to be so applied as to receive a satisfactory guarantee as to be non-staining of the finished plaster.

(w) Cleaning Down.-All face brick work on the elevations shall be washed down with aqua fortis and water at the time the stone work is cleaned, care being exercised not to stain the stone. The stone will be cleaned by the contractor furnishing the same.

(x) Blue Stone Templates.-Furnish and set all masonry blue stone templates for steel beams resting on brick walls. Templates not to exceed 12 by 12 by 12 in. thick. Top surface to be quarry axed and exposed surfaces to be tooled. Templates to be set to the levels required to receive the steel work.

If steel wall plates are used the same are to be set by the masons to the proper level.

(y) Blue Stone Sills & Lintels.-Provide and set blue stone sills and lintels for openings in the rear wall and division wall between Turbine and Boiler Room.

All sills to be washed and lugged, sawed and planed.

(z) Coping.-Where areas are indicated furnish and set blue stone coping 12 in. wide by 5 in. thick and in convenient long lengths.

Coping to be sawed and planed on exposed surfaces and laid true to grade.

All exposed ends to have heads.

All blue stone to be free from rust, stains or other defects.

(aa) Granite.-All material shown on the front and side elevations, with the exception of the face of walls shown to be of "face brick," shall be of selected first quality granite, even in color, free from all flaws or other imperfections, of uniform quality without laminations or other stratifications, also free from excess of mica or of feldspar. Any or all such defects in this material may cause the rejection of the material.

Granite shall be inspected at the quarry or at the building site or cutting shed as selected.

All granite work is to extend at least four inches below the sidewalk level or floor of areas and shall be stepped to follow the grading. All stone required on the rear elevation, except where "blue stone" is indicated or herein specified, shall be of granite.

All face work below the first story water-table shall be "coarse pointed"; jambs and washes will be "four cut"; the same shall include butting blocks at entrance doors on the side elevations, also the entrance steps, platforms, door-sills and ramps shall be best four-cut work, excepting that the front entrance steps and ramps together with the coping at loggia shall be eight-cut work.

The remaining work shall be best six-cut. All stone to hold the full sections indicated on the details. All granite to be jointed for bed and bond as indicated on the stone diagrams and in no case
