When Pilate saw that he could prevail no- Matt. thing, but that rather a tumult was made, he 4, 25. took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying; "I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it." Then answered all the people, and said; "His blood be on us, and on our children."

15.

And so Pilate, willing to content the people, M.xv. released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Je- Matt sus into the common hall, and gathered unto 27-30. him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying; "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they spit upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head.

Pilate went forth again, and saith unto xix. them;" Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know I find no fault in him.' (Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe.) And Pilate saith unto them; "Behold the man."

When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying; "Crucify him, crucify him."

Pilate saith unto them; "Take ye him, and crucify him; for I find no fault in him."

The Jews answered him; "We have a

law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; and went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus; "Whence art thou?"

But Jesus gave him no answer.

Then saith Pilate unto him; "Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not, that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?"

Jesus answered; "Thou couldst have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above; therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin."

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying; "If thou let this man go, thou art not Cesar's friend; whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Cesar."

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment-seat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha; (and it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour;) and he saith unto the Jews; "Behold your king!"

But they cried out; "Away with him; away with him; crucify him."

Pilate saith unto them; "Shall I crucify your King?"

The chief priests answered; "We have no king but Cesar."

Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. And after that they had Matt. mocked him, they took the robe off from him, 31. and put his own raiment on him; and led him away to crucify him.

CHAPTER XXXVII.

Crucifixion and Burial of Christ.

xxiii.

AND as they led him away, they laid hold L upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of 2. the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women; which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them, said; Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me; but weep for yourselves and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming in the which they shall say; 'Blessed are the barren, and the paps which never gave suck.' Then shall they begin to say to the mountains; 'Fall on us;' and to the hills; Cover us.' For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"

And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified

him, and the malefactors; one on the right Mahand, and the other on the left. They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall; and when he had tasted thereof he would not Mk.V. drink. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith; "And he was numbered with the transgressors.'

Then said Jesus; "Father, forgive them ; for they know not what they do."

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was; "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." This title then. read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate; "Write not; The king of the Jews;- but that he said; 'I am the king of the Jews." "

Pilate answered;

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, (and made four parts, to every soldier a part,) and also his coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves; "Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be." That the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith; "They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." These things therefore the soldiers did.

And they that passed by, reviled him, wag

ging their heads, and saying; "Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself; if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross." Likewise also the chief priests, mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said; "He saved others, himself he cannot save; if he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him; for he said; I am the Son of God.''

And one of the malefactors, which were Lk. hanged, railed on him, saying; "If thou be 39-43. the Christ, save thyself and us."

But the other answering, rebuked him, saying; "Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done nothing amiss." And he said unto Jesus; "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."

And Jesus said unto him; " Verily I say unto thee, to day shalt thou be with me in paradise.'

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his. mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother; "Woman, behold thy son.' Then saith he to the disciple; "Behold thy mother." And from that hour that disciple
