(0) The company returning home must needs have been very great, as all the males from every part of the country were obliged to appear before the Lord at Jerusalem on each of the three great festivals, viz. the feast of unleavened bread, or the passover; the fealt of weeks, or pentecoft ; and the feast of tabernacles. (8) From this advice we learn the crimes most usually committed by the Roman soldiery: and if we compare our own condition with that of the Jews who were liable to their violence and wickedness, we shall know how to value the free constitution we live under, in wbich the military power is subject to the law of the land, and employed not for oppression, but for protection and security.
(h) The shoes then worn had no upper leather, but were tied across the top of the foot. St. John's meaning was, that he was not wortby to do the lowest office about the person of Christ.

ily The antient Jewish doctors, in their commentary on the Old Teftament, expressly call the Virgin Mary the daughter of Heli; whence it is probable St. Luke is here giving her genealogy. It may also be fupposed, that Mary being an only child, her husband Joseph was by the Jewish law accounted the son of Heli, though he was really the son of Jacob, Mat. i. 16. By tracing her family through David and Abrahain up to Adam and God, St. Luke shews Jesus, the actual son of Mary, and the fupposed fon of Joseph, to have been not only the Christ, or Messiah of the Jews, but the seed of the woman promised at the fall, who was to be the Saviour of mankind.
