(c) Believing in my doctrine, imitating my example, and obeying my commands, is the true and only way to everlafting happiness.

AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh away and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it (a), that it may bring forth more 3 fruit. Now ye are clean (b) through the word which 4 I have fpoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you (c). As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except 5 ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do no6 thing (d). If a man abide not in me, he is caft forth as a branch (e), and is withered; and men gather them, and caft them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye afk what ye will, and it fhall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much

(k) I fhall not long have an opportunity of inftructing you, the powers of the world being now at work to deftroy me; and though guilty of no fin myself, I am ready to lay down my life for the fins of the world, that I may fulfil the will of my Father.

are my friends, if ye do whatfoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not fervants; for the fervant

knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends (i); for all things that I have heard of 16 my Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chofen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit fhould remain (k): that whatsoever ye fhall afk of the Father in my name, he may give it 17 you. These things I command you, that ye love 18 one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it 19 hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the

world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chofen you out 20 of the world, therefore the world hateth you (1). Re

(If ye were like the rest of the world, you would efcape all the perfecution you must now expect for preaching against their vices.
