ceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becom23 eth unfruitful. But he that received feed into the

good ground, is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it: which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth some an hundred-fold, fome fixty, fome

The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man, 25 which sowed good feed in his field: But while

men slept, his enemy came, and lowed tares among 26 the wheat, and went his

The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard

seed, which a man took and fowed in his field. 32 Which indeed is the least of all (f) seeds: but when

it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree: fo that the birds of the air come

and lodge in the branches thereof (8). . 33 Another parable spake he unto them, The king

dom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole

was leavened. 34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude

in parables, and without a parable spake he not 35 unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was

spoken by the prophet, faying, I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house : and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

had found one pearl of great price, he went and sold

all that he had, and bought it. 47

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind. 48 Which when it was full, they drew to fhore, and fat

down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the 49

bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world :

the angels shall come forth, and fever the wicked 50 from among the juft ; And shall cast them into the

furnace of fire : there shall be wailing and gnashing 31 of teeth. Jefus faith unto them, Have ye understood

all these things? They fay unto him, Yea, Lord. 52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every fcribe

(i) It is a known culom in the East for the rich to make collections of costly garinents and furniture, continually adding things new to the old. In allusion to this custom our Lord here observes, that every teacher fully infructed by him in the truths of the go.pel, may be compared to an housholder, who has great fiore of valuable ara ticles, ready to be produced on any occasion.

(k) Instead of acknowledging the divine authority of Jesus Christ, which was thus manifested by the wisdom and excellency of his doctrine, and the amazing power of his miracles, the Jews took offence at the meanness of his parentage and education. And this, with their objections against his manner of life, and gracious condescension in conversing with sinners, Chap. xi. 19. is the blasphemy against the Son of man, mentioned Chap. xii. 32.

AT T that time Herod the tetrarch (a) heard of the

fame of Jesus. And said unto his servants, This is John the baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth them

selves in him. 3

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' fake, bis 4 brother Philip’s wife. For John said unto him, It 5

is not lawful for thee to have her. And when he

would have put him to death, he feared the multi6 tude, because they counted him as a prophet. But

when Herod's birth-day was kept, the daughter of

Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her g whatsoever she would ask. And she, being before

instructed of her mother, faid, Give me here John 9 Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was for ?

ry: nevertheless for the oath's fake (b), and them

which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to 10 be tiven her. And he fent and beheaded John in 11 the prison. And his head was brought in a charger,

and given to the damsel : and the brought it to her 12 mother.

And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. (0) A Tetrarch is the governor of a fourth part of a country. On the death of Herod the Great, his dominions were divided into four parts. Galilee, being one of the four parts, was given to his fen Herod, surnamed Antipas, Luke iii. 1. and Judea, which was another fourth part, was given to Archelaus, brother of Antipas, Matt. ii. 22. Philip and Lyfanias had the rest, Luke iii. 1.

(6) Let no man pretend, that reverence of an oath obligeth him to break any of the laws of Gad. An oath cannot be binding where th: subject of it is unlawful. Nor let refpe&t to the opinion of others' tempt him by a false shame to venture upon sin. For, what is that, but to prefer a point of honour and reputation before the favour of God, which is better than all the world can bestow?
