In a discourse which I delivered at the opening of the Spring Assize, I took occasion to observe, that while, in our courts of justice, the instances of punishable false swearing are comparatively rare, we have too frequently to lament those instances of transgression, which are marked by evasions, suppressions of the truth, prevarications, and the like; all which amount to nothing short of bearing "false witness against our neighbour," though they evade the grasp of human laws. And I went on to remark, that the frequency of such transgressions must be attributed to the very general absence of the fear of the Lord.
