URING the month of December, 1927, there were received as gifts,

4,472 volumes, 9,328 pamphlets, 39 maps, and 15 prints. Some interesting items were the following:

From Señor Raul Arredondo, Mexico City, Mexico, came a copy of the privately printed work -"An Englishman and the Mexican Inquisition 1556-1560, being an account of the Voyage of Robert Tomson to New Spain... edited by G. R. G. Conway," Mexico City, 1927. From Miss Clara A. Avery, Chicago, came a copy of "Fragment and Orderly Book by Capt. Jonathan Eddy 1755-1759, edited by Clara A. Avery" (reproduced with the consent of the owners of the originals, Mrs. Eliza Eddy Gubtil and Mr. Edwin H. Eddy). From the Bergen County Historical Society, Hackensack, N. J., came copies of "Lower Half of an original Survey done for His Excellency General Washington, by Robt. Erskine, F.R.S., Geographer to the Army 1778-1779" [c. 1920]; "Orderly Book of the New Jersey Brigade July 20-Oct. 8, 1780" (from the original manuscript in The New York Public Library); "The Final Century of the Wampum Industry in Bergen County, N. J., compiled by Frances A. Westervelt," 1916. Mr. Richard W. Ellis, The Georgian Press, New York, gave a copy (No. 476 of 500 printed) of "B. R., America's Typographic Playboy," by Carl Purington Rollins, M.A., New York, 1927. Mr. Lucius L. Hubbard, Ann Arbor, Michigan, gave a copy of his privately printed work-"Notes on the Adventures and Surprizing Deliverances of James Dubourdieu and His Wife, a Source for Gulliver's Travels, also The Adventures of Alexander Vendchurch," Ann Arbor, 1927. From the John Rylands Library, Manchester, England, came a copy of Volume 1 of "Woodbroke Studies; Christian Documents in Syriac, Arabic, and Garshūni, edited and translated with a critical apparatus, by A. Mingana," Cambridge, 1927. Mr. John Albert Scott, Rome, N. Y., gave a copy of his work -"Fort Stanwix (Fort Schuyler) and Oriskany...," Sesquicentennial Edition, Rome, 1927. From Herr Herbert Reichner, Vienna, came a copy of his work-"Die Gutenberg-Bibel der Sammlung Vollbehr; Schicksale des kostbarsten Buches," Wien, 1927. Mrs. Edward J. Tytus, London, gave the Library a copy of "Two Ramesside

From the General Library of the University of Michigan came a copy of "The Minor Prophets in the Freer Collection and the Berlin Fragment of Genesis," by Henry A. Sanders and Carl Schmidt, New York, 1927; also a copy (No. 68 of 400 printed) of the Facsimile of the Washington Manuscript of the Minor Prophets in the Freer Collection and the Berlin Fragment of Genesis with an Introduction, by Henry A. Sanders," Ann Arbor, 1927. From the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan came a copy of "Benjamin Franklin's Proposals for the Education of Youth in Pennsylvania, 1749," Ann Arbor, 1927 (330 copies printed by Bruce Rogers at Harvard University Press, Cambridge, May, 1927).

From the American Blue Book Publishers, Chicago, came a copy of the "American Elite and Sociologist; A Distinct Cyclopedia of Twenty Thousand of America's Best Families... Edited and compiled under the Auspices of Thomas Herringsham," Chicago, 1927. From Mr. Louis Lande came a copy of "Abraham Lincoln, the Tribute of the Synagogue, edited by Emanuel Hertz," New York, 1927. Prof. Edwin R. A. Seligman gave the Library the two volumes of his work -"The Economics of Instalment Selling, a Study in Consumers' Credit, with special reference to the automobile," New York, 1927. Mr. Andrew B. Werth, Deputy Register, Queens County, gave the Library six volumes of "Court of Appeals. The People of the State of New York, Plaintiff-Respondent against Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray, Defendants-Appellants, Case on Appeal [May 27, 1927]." From Mr. John A. Widtsoe, Salt Lake City, came a copy of "Discourses of Brigham Young, Selected and Arranged by John A. Widtsoe" [c. 1925].

Collections of material were received from the following: Arts Council (14 volumes, 9 pamphlets, 113 periodicals); Mrs. G. Clausen (108 volumes, 4 pamphlets); Mr. Arthur Falkenau (184 volumes, 91 pamphlets, 147 periodicals); Fratelli Alinari Soc. An., Florence, Italy (3 volumes, 26 pamphlets, being catalogues of photographs of works of art in Italian Galleries); Freiheit, New York City (6 volumes, 6 pamphlets); Mr. W. Hansen (6 volumes, 2 pamphlets); Mr. William B. Harvey, Philadelphia (a collection of Quaker material, 42 volumes, 20 pamphlets); Mr. W. de Forest Haynes (a collection of mystery and detective stories, comprising 139 volumes); Mrs. Hermine Hering (13 volumes, 2 pamphlets); Miss Katharine T.

Martin (6 volumes, 95 pamphlets, 392 periodicals); Miss Pauline Pfingstag 174 volumes, 49 pamphlets); Mr. Nathaniel Sears (18 volumes by B. W. Newton and S. P. Tregelles); Mrs. B. B. Tunstall (26 volumes, 5 pamphlets).

Miss Julia E. Casey gave the Library a collection of sheet music, being popular songs of the period 1900-1927 and containing 270 items. Mr. Erwin E. Harder, Chicago, gave his composition, "Tropical Episodes Fairy Dances and Characteristic Pieces, for the Piano, Vol. 2." From Mr. Frank W. Asper, Salt Lake City, came a copy of "Ludwig van Beethoven, Thematisches Verzeichnis von Gustav Nottebohm nebst der Bibliotheca Beethoveniana von Emerich Kastner...," Leipzig, 1925.

Miss Ruth Moran gave the Library two etchings by M. N. Moran and one etching by T. Moran. Mr. Timothy Cole, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., gave two of his wood-engravings ("Philemon and Baucis" after Rembrandt, and “Thomas Jefferson," after Gilbert Stuart). From the Stadtrat, Karlsbad, Czechoslovakia, came a portfolio containing 20 etchings of Karlsbad "Anlässlich des 25. Besuches unserer Heilquellen gewidmet vom Stadtrat Karlsbad."

ADDITIONS AND USE OF THE LIBRARY IN DECEMBER, 1927

URING the month of December, 1927, there were received at the Library 23,413 volumes and 10,059 pamphlets. (These include the additions to both Reference and Circulation Departments.) The number of volumes issued for home use was 945,843. The total number of recorded readers in the Reference Department, Central Building, was 176,616, no record being kept of the use of books on open shelves. Readers and visitors at the Central Building numbered about 323,500.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS

T the meeting of the Board of Trustees, held on January 11, 1928, Dr. John H. Finley and Mr. Wilson M. Powell were elected Trustees of the Library, to fill the vacancies caused by the deaths of Mr. William W. Appleton and Mr. Stephen H. Olin, respectively.

At the same meeting, Mr. Frank L. Polk was elected Second VicePresident, to fill the vacancy in that office caused by the death of Mr. Cleveland H. Dodge.
