THE JEWISH NATION. ITS ORIGIN AND PURPOSE. Gen. xii, 1-3. Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families

of the earth be blessed.

Exod. vi, 7. And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

Exod. xix, 6. And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Deut. vii, 6, 7. For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; (for ye were the fewest of all people.)

Deut. x, 15. Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.

Deut. xiv, 2. For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.

Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel: moreover, I will subdue all thine enemies.

Furthermore I tell thee, that the LORD will build thee an house. For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.

P3. xlviii, 8. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever.

Ps. xcvii, 8. Zion heard and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.

Isa. xliv, 1, 2. Yet now hear, O Jacob, my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: Thus saith

the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

Isa. lx, 15, 21. Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations. Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

Isa. lxvi, 22. For as the new heavens, and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain

Jer. xxxi, 36, 37. If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Thus saith the LORD, If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath; I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

Jer. xxxiii, 17, 18, 25, 26. For thus saith the LORD, David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel: Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt-offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually. Thus saith the LORD, If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth. Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

Joel iii, 20. But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

Amos iii, 2. You only have I Known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

Mal. i, 5. And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.

John viii, 39. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

Rom. il, 17-19. Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the

II-ISRAEL IN EGYPT. Gen. xlvi, 2-7. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation. I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. And Jacob rose up from Beer-sheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the waggons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sous' daughters, and all his seed, brought he with him into Egypt.

Exod. i, 1--5. Now these are the names of the children of Israel which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Isaachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Joshua xxiv, 4. And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

Acts vii, 6, 14, 15. And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years. Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls. So

SUFFERINGS IN EGYPT. Exod. i, 8-11, 13, 14. Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. Come on, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it falleth out any war, they join also come to pass, that, when there unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Exod. vi, 1, 5, 6, 9. Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land. And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant. Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage; and I will redeem you with a stretched-out And Moses spake so unto the chilarm, and with great judgments. dren of Israel: but they hearkened

Exod. xi, 1. And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one

Deut. iv, 20. But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

Deut. v, 6. I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Exod. vi. 11-13, 26-30. Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land. And Moses spake before the LORD, saying, Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips? And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel, and unto Pharaoh king Deut. xxvi, 6, 7. Acts vii, 7, 18, 19, 34. And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place. Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph: The same dealt subtilely with our kindred, and evil-entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

COMMISSION OF MOSES.

Exod. iii, 10-12, 18. Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a

token unto thee that I have sent thee; When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The Lord God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the

Exod. vii, 2, 7, 14, 15. Thou shalt speak all that I command thee;

Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh's heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go. Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning, lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river's brink against he come; and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.

Exod. iv. 22, 23. And thou shalt

abominationof the Egyptian before
their eyes, and will they not stone
us? We will go three days' journey
into the wilderness, and sacrifice
to the LORD our God, as he shall
command us. And Pharaoh said,
I will let you go, that ye may
sacrifice to the LORD your God in
the wilderness; only ye shall not
go very far away: entreat for me.
And Moses said, Behold, I go out
from thee, and I will entreat the
LORD that the swarms of flies may
depart from Pharaoh, from his
servants, and from his people, to-
morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal
deceitfully any more, in not letting
the people go to sacrifice to the
LORD.

Exod. ix, 1, 13, 15, 17. Then the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me. And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the

morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me. For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go? Exod. x, 7-11, 24-26, 28, 29. And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? Let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed? And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go? And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go: for we must hold a feast unto the LORD. And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you. Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence. And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you. And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God. Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind: for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we

come thither. And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no

more: for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die. And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well; I will see thy face again no

more.

Exod. xi, 8. And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a

great anger.

Exod. xii, 31-33. And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said. Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also. And the Egyptians were urgent upon

Exod. xii, 37, 38, 51. And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides children. And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. And it came to pass the self-same day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.

1 Chron. xvii, 21. And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt.

Ps. lxxvii, 15. Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.

Ps. cv, 37. He brought them forth also with silver and gold; and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

Micah vil, 15. According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I show unto Lim marvellous things.

Acts vii, 35, 36. This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer, by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. He brought wonders and signs in the land of them out, after that he had shewed Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

Deut. iv, 34. Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a Acts xii, 17. The God of this mighty hand, and by a stretched-people of Israel chose our fathers, out arm, and by great terrors, and exalted the people when they according to all that the LORD dwelt as strangers in the land of your God did for you in Egypt Egypt, and with an high arm before your eyes? brought he them out of it.

Exod. xviii, 9. And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

Jer. ii, 36. Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

Num. xv, 41. I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; I am the LORD your God. Judges vi, 7-9. And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children Jer. xiii, 8-11. 13-19. thus with us, to carry us forth out
of Egypt? Is not this the word
that we did tell thee in Egypt,
saying, Let us alone, that we may
serve the Egyptians? for it had
been better for us to serve the
Egyptians, than that we should
die in the wilderness.

Num. xiv, 4. And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
