Quotations in History: A Dictionary of Historical Quotations C. 800 A.D. to the Present

Quotations in history presents the great moments of history captured in a single pithy phrase, and brings together the great figures of history in their own words. The book ranges over 1,200 years, from the crowning of Charlemagne and his holy Roman Empire in the West in 800 A.D. to Neil Armstrong's first footfall on the moon, and even more recent events through to the end of 1975. With some 1,600 entries, it fills a surprising gap in reference and historical literature. Its accuracy and authority are undoubted. Alan Palmer is both an established historian and compiler of reference works; Veronica Palmer, an expert on the classical and medieval periods, has previously assisted her husband on the preparation and writing of his books. Quotations in history includes not only the famous phrases which everyone knows, but can never quite place exactly and date precisely, but longer passages that capture the essence of an historical figure's character or the spirit of a particular historical event. Particular care has been given to establishing the date of quotations wherever possible. With some of the better-known remarks the authors have chosen to present rather more of their context than is customary.
