manded by the gas companies, however, should be allowed the liabilities will amount to very nearly double the sum specified above. You will therefore see the importance of some arrangement being made between the gas companies and the city, by which the differences now existing may be settled on a satisfactory and just basis.

This is also necessary, because, until such is done, the public lamps cannot be kept in as good condition as they should be; there are now about fifty lamp-posts which have been broken down in various parts of the city, during the last five months; and, which I have not caused to be reset, as I have deemed it impolitic to send any orders to the gas companies to do work, lest, by so doing, it might be considered as recognizing the demands made by them. There are also resolutions for lamps in front of several churches, which the parties desiring the same are extremely anxious should be complied with, but I have declined to have the lamps fitted up for the reasons given above.

The contract with William Brandon for five thousand gas lamps is now nearly completed, forty-two hundred and fifty having been delivered, and the balance will be finished in the course of a few weeks.

The contract with John O'Donnell for fifteen hundred cast-iron lamp-posts, is now in progress, some of the posts have been delivered, but no vouchers have as yet been drawn for the same.

All of which is respectfully submitted,

WM. H. CHARLOCK,

Superintendent of Lamps and Gas.
