THIS epistle is addressed to a person of the name of Gaius, or Caius, who must have been a respectable_and_wealthy member of some church in the neighbourhood of Ephesus, where the apostle resided, and of which Diotrephes was the bishop. 1 He commendeth Gaius for his piety, 5 and hospitality 7 to true preachers: 9 complaining of the unkind dealing of ambitious Diotrephes on the contrary side, 11 whose evil example is not to be followed: 12 and giveth special testimony to the good report of Deme trius. JOHN, xxi. 24: This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things and we know that his testimony is true. 2 JOHN, 12. : THE GENERAL EPISTLE OF Jude. JUDE, or rather Judas, surnamed Lebbeus and Thaddeus, was the son of Alpheus or Cleophas, the brother of James the Less, the cousin-german of our Saviour, and one of the twelve apostles. His call to be a disciple of Jesus is not recorded; and except in the catalogue of the apostles he is mentioned only once in the Gospels. After Christ's interesting discourse to his disciples not long before his crucifixion, "Judas saith unto him (not Iscariot), Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world (JOHN, xiv. 22) ?" From this question it is inferred, that at this time Judas had the common prejudice of the Jews concerning the kingdom of the Messiah. Jude is not mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, nor does any ancient author record of him a single circumstance on which we can depend. He is generally reckoned among those apostles who did not suffer martyrdom. The Epistle of St. Jude was considered as genuine by several of the ancient fathers; Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, and Epiphanius. Jerome says, "Jude, brother of James, left a short epistle, which is one of the seven called Catholic. But, because of a quotation from a book of Enoch which is apocryphal, it is rejected by many; however, at length it has obtained authority, and is reckoned among the sacred scriptures." Upon this subject it has been remarked that Jude does not in fact quote any book of Enoch: he my says, that "Enoch prophesied," and that prophesy might have been traditional. To whatever Jade refers, it does not foa sufficient reason for setting aside the genuineness ĐỂ THE DOCK, in opposition to the authorities of the ancient fathers.
