We take pleasure in announcing Prof. Cooley's Series, as above indicated, which will, we feel as sured, afford facilities in this department of science-in the particular of simple, clear, accurate statement of the subject matter, accompanied by fertility of practical methods-which the most inventive, skilful teachers have long needed, but looked for heretofore in vain.

CHARLES SCRIBNER & CO.,

Perce's Magnetic Globes,

For the School and Family.

The large number of peculiar special uses of THE GLOBE in every school-room, renders the possession of such an instrument

AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY.

The mere appearance of the Globe conveys clearer ideas to the mind, in several departments of instruction, than can be obtained by months of diligent reading and study; for example,

THE FORM OF OUR EARTH.

THE SIZE AND POSITIONS OF THE OCEANS.

THE SIZE AND POSITIONS OF THE CONTINENTS.

THE DAILY AND ANNUAL REVOLUTIONS OF THE EARTH.

THE TRUE IDEAS OF DIRECTION AND DISTANCE.

THE IDEAS OF LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE.

THE TRUE IDEA AND METHOD OF COMPUTING TIME.
THE VARIABLENESS IN LENGTH OF DAY AND NIGHT
THE CHANGES OF THE SEASONS.

THE EBB AND FLOW OF TIDES.

THESE AND MANY OTHER INTERESTING FACTS IN NATURE AND SCIENCE, CAN BE EASILY TAUGHT BY THE USE OF THE GLOBE.

PERCE'S GLOBES

Possess the additional advantage over all others, of illustrating Gravitation.

These Globes are metallic, and by the use of highly magnetized objects, representing men of different races, animals peculiar to different climes, lighthouses, steamers, ships; the actual living, moving world, with much of its most interesting and instructive phenomena, is presented in miniature to the mind of the pupil.

Perce's Magnetic Globes are now manufactured in the best manner, covered with modern maps lately revised, handsomely colored and varnished; they are mounted on black walnut stands, and elegantly finished.

[blocks in formation]

ONE DOZEN MAGNETIC OBJECTS,

REPRESENTING MEN OF DIFFERENT RACES, SHIPS, STEAMERS, LIGHTHOUSES, AND VARIOUS ANIMALS, AND MRS. SMITH'S GLOBE MANUAL ACCOMPANY EACH GLOBE

WITHOUT ADDITIONAL COST.

These Globes are securely packed, and can be sent safely any distance. D

IMPORTANT SPECIAL ANNOUNCE-
MENTS.

Messrs. CHARLES SCRIBNER & Co. beg leave to call especial attention to several very important enterprises, full particulars concerning which will be found elsewhere in this number of THE

BOOK BUYER :

I.

A LIBRARY OF TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE.

This new series will be eminently popular in character, edited by BAYARD TAYLOR, and, like The Wonder LIBRARY, profusely illustrated.

II.

A THEOLOGICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL LIBRARY,

edited by Drs. HENRY B. SMITH and PHILIP SCHAFF, and intended to cover, by means of at

V.

SECOND SERIES OF THE WONDER LIBRARY.

The new series of this most popular library will include MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES, Wonders of VEGETATION, WONDERS OF ELECTRICITY, WONDERS OF WATER, and WONDERS OF ENGRAVING-all, except the last, edited by American writers, and like the first series of the same LIBRARY, with numerous illustrations.

A LIBRARY OF TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE. EDITED BY BAYARD TAYLOR.

ENCOURAGED by the great success of the LIBRARY OF WONDERS, Messrs. CHAS. SCRIBNER & Co. have undertaken the publication of a work of an equally instructive and popular character, namely, a LIBRARY OF TRAVEL, EXPLORATION, AND ADVENTURE, which will be edited by BAYARD TAYLOR, and profusely and elegantly illustrated.

At this moment, when the various hitherto unknown and mysterious regions of the earth are looming into light, and our knowledge concerning them is gradually changing from the mythical to the real, the presentation of the proposed series -which will not only chronicle the wanderings of the earlier adventurer, but keep pace with the rapid advance of the modern explorer—is exceedingly timely.

The design is to furnish picturesque, practical, and full accounts of the most interesting lands and races, gathered from the narratives of the most reliable travellers and explorers; each volume to be devoted to a special country or region, and to be complete in itself. Every volume, therefore, will give, first, a brief preliminary sketch of the country to which it is devoted; next, an outline

least one standard book, every principal topic of early explorations sufficient to explain what has

under these general heads. It is intended to make this work a necessity to every student of every denomination.

III.

THE BIBLE COMMENTARY,

known in England as The Speaker's Comment ary, and hailed everywhere as par excellence "The Commentary for the People." The first volume of this has already been issued.

IV.

JOWETT'S PLATO,

been achieved by later travellers; and finally, a condensation of one or more of the most important narratives of recent travel, accompanied by illustrations of the scenery, architecture, and the life of the races. Certain volumes of the

Library, however, will be devoted entirely to

such stories of individual daring and adventure as may be likely to arrest public attention.

It will be the constant care of the editor-than whom no living writer can be better fitted by experience for this enterprise-to separate what is doubtful or exaggerated in the literature of travel from what is true. The successive books will not

accepted in England and America as the standard only present a fund of sound and practical infor

and final translation.
