All subscribers to the BOOK BUYER can know the number with which their subscriptions expire by looking at the figures in the lower left-hand corner of the wrapper, the number at the right of the line being the year, and that at the left the month with which the subscription runs out.

After March, 1873, all names now on our books to whose address the BOOK BUYER is sent free will be taken off the list, with the exception of Librarians and Booksellers, to whom it will be sent as heretofore. This is to relieve us from sending it to many who do not wish for it. those to whom it is of any value whatever, it certainly is worth the small price (twenty-five cents per annum) required for it, and those desiring to receive it regularly after the above date, who can find no marks in the corner of the wrapper of the present number, can secure it until March, 1874, by sending the price.

it in beauty and appropriateness of illustration. As a collection of poems dearest to the heart of the people, it far exceeds in popularity any other similar anthology. This reissue of the work has given an opportunity for classifying the poems under the divisions of Songs of Home, Songs of the Heart, Songs of Life, Songs of Nature, and also for introducing into each part quite a number of the favorite productions of the younger poets. Additional illustrations have also been introduced, after designs by Moran, Hennessy, Miss Hallock, Miss Ledyard, Griswold. Gifford, &c., &c., and the four parts together worthily perpetuate the popularity of the original work.

Among the other well-known illustrated works which are steadily in demand as gift-books from year to year are Kathrina, Bitter Sweet, and that unique and unrivalled work Floral Belles, which, in these days of chromo-lithograph, is a source of wonder from the patience and skill combined in its production.

The famous Wonder Books also retain their deserved popularity as a storehouse of entertainment and instruction for readers of all ages. The twenty volumes of the first series, with over

one thousand illustrations, are as valuable a present as could be made to any at all interested in natural science and in adventure. In the second series there are now ready four volumes.

Equalling this series in permanent value and artistic attractiveness is the Library of Travel, edited by Bayard Taylor. Five volumes of this library have now been issued, viz.: Japan, Arabia,

The Yellowstone, Wild Men and Wild Beasts, and South Africa. This last is specially valuable now in connection with Stanley's How I Found Livingstone. It shows what previous explorers have done, and how Stanley's work supplements that before accomplished. Each of the volumes is a valuable compend in itself, since it presents a complete survey of the country to which it is devoted.

Roundabout Rambles, by Frank R. Stockton, is SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & CO.'S CHRISTMAS the brightest, freshest book for young readers

BOOKS.

MESSRS. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co. offer to the public this year their usual choice collection of exquisitely illustrated books, and of popular and standard works in fine bindings suitable for gifts. Songs of Nature heads the list. This is the fourth and last division of the very popular reissue of Folk Songs. Folk Songs, when first published, marked an era in gift-book illustration, and during the time that has elapsed since its appearance nothing has been offered excelling

issued for many a year, and in addition to its excellent letter-press it is illustrated with two hundred superb engravings. A very few years ago it would have been utterly impossible to have produced such a book at a price which would have rendered its possession possible by one among a thousand of the younger readers who will now value it as a treasure. That such a superb volume can be offered at $2.50. is one of the mysteries of the present era of bookmaking.

The numerous standard works included in the list of Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co.'s pub. lications give a wide field of selection to those who wish to make really valuable presents. Froude's History of England, his Short Studies, and History of Ireland, Mommsen's Rome, Cur tius' Greece, Max Muller's, Prof. Whitney's, and Hon. Geo. P. Marsh's works on Language and Literature, &c., &c., all may be had in fine bindings.

Among religious works are Lange's Commentary (15 volumes now published), the Speaker's Commentary, and, just in time for the holiday season, The Minister's Library, which includes twenty of the best works of the best authors for whom Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co. publish. This series of works, which, if purchased singly, would cost FIFTY DOLLARS, are supplied for THIRTY DOLLARS in this form. It is a rare chance for ministers to add to their libraries some of the most valuable works ever published in this country, or for parishioners to make a most acceptable gift to their pastors.

BEAUTIFUL BOOKS FOR THE HOLIDAYS. WITHIN a few days still further additions have been made to the splendid show of foreign illustrated works imported by SCRIBNER, WELFORD & Armstrong, especially for the present holiday market. The chief among these is Chefs-d' Euvres of Art and Masterpieces of Engraving, selected from the Celebrated Collection of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum. These pictures are reproduced in photography by Stephen Thompson, and are accompanied by letter-press descriptions from the works of such eminent critics as Hazlitt, Ruskin, &c. The painters represented are Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaelle, Titian, Watteau (the Turner of figure painting), | Turner (the Watteau of landscape), Hogarth, Reynolds, Landseer, and others of equal eminence. The volume is a handsome folio, and is perfect in every detail: the title page is a wonder of good taste and of the finest typography.

hood and Youth in Holy Writ, with twelve photographs after old and new masters; Keats's Endymion, with Poynter's illustrations.

A work which appeals especially to the lovers of Art is Lubke's History of Sculpture, giving an account not only of the earliest attempts at sculpture, and the classic era, but also reviewing the modern field. The two volumes of this valua ble history are illustrated with some four hun

dred illustrations.

A host of miscellaneous works, old and new, invites the inspection of those searching for cheap as well as expensive gifts. The five volumes of The Romance of History each complete in itself, are illustrated by Landseer, and other artists. We may merely mention the new illustrated edition of the Bronte novels; Guillemin's Forces of Nature, with eleven colored plates, and 450 woodcuts, the very romance of science; Our Work in Palestine; and Proctor's The Orbs Around Us, a series of familiar essays on the moon and planets, meteors and comets, sun, and colored pairs of suns.

DR. HODGE'S THEOLOGY COMPLETE. THE third and last volume of Dr. Hodge's Systematic Theology, is now in the hands of the public. It is a work of such magnitude and importance, that it is cause for congratulation that the distinguished author, who lately celebrated the semi-centennial of his connection with Princeton Theological Seminary, should have been spared to carry it to completion. It is a monument to years of patient study and research, such as no American author has ever before erected to himself; and there is no other similar work which so completely furnishes the defenders of the orthodox faith with weapons to meet the assaults of scepticism and infidelity. In completing the work, Dr. Hodge found him. self compelled to extend this third volume to nearly 900 pages, in order to make the discussion of the topics which it covers as full as was necessary. This unexpected increase in the size has compelled the publisher to advance the price of the volume to $5. The supplementary volume containing the analysis and index of topics and of scripture texts, is now in the hands of the

In this connection, we must again call attention to The Picture Gallery of Modern English Art, and The Picture Gallery of Sacred Art, both illustrated by permanent photographs, and hav-printer and will be published next spring. ing accompanying descriptive letter press.
