the first two books of the series. A single characteristic, which distinguishes these books, will commend them to universal approval. In the improvement of elementary methods of instruction during the last few years, the Phonic, the Word, and the Alphabet methods of teaching to read have had their believers and advocates. The contest over the excellences of these systems has been earnest, and each has its friends. The different series of Readers now in the market have been based, some on one, and some on the other of these systems-or perhaps on no system at all. Prof. Sheldon has very happily arranged his Readers so that they may be used in connection with either the Word, the Phonic, or the Alphabet method. The accomplishment of this has of course involved great labor, but the idea is carried through the books with entire success, and the result is a series of Readers which is sure of wider acceptance, for this reason alone, than any other in the market. The selections themselves have been made with conscientious care, and are thoroughly well graded so as to carry the pupil forward step by step, and the following considerations have been constantly kept in view: "THE FOREIGNER IN FAR CATHAY." MR. MEDHURST's little volume has easily won the praise of American critics. It is a pity that the same writer could not do for other curious lands just what he has done for China. We should like, for instance, to have a book of the same kind, by the same author, in which Japan, or India, or Russia should be as distinctly “practically," in the American language we may say, laid before us, as in these pages "Far Cathay is outspread. It must be Mr. Warner himself who writes in the Hartford Courant as follows: "We have not seen any little book about China that tells us so many characteristic things we want to know as this little volume called The Foreigner in Far Cathay, by W. H. Medhurst, English consul at Shanghae. Larger works appear to be overcome by the vastness of the subject, and their authors do little more than add to our confused conception of a great and stupid empire. Mr. Medhurst tells clearly what he sees, and when he gives his opinion upon the relations of foreigners to the Chinese, upon the attitude of the government, upon the missionaries and their partial success, especially the Protestants, we get some light on the questions." OXLEY, BY "LYNDON." WHILE the literary market is being deluged by 1.-To put in the reading books only that which is de- fiction, of a class, perhaps all the more baneful signed for the children. 2.—By a careful gradation of lessons, and by a frequent repetition of words in new combinations, to avoid wearisome drills on the same lesson. 3. To give a vocabulary of the choicest and most ex pressive descriptive terms adapted to accompany or to fol low a well-selected COURSE OF OBJECT LESSONS, without in any way, making such a course essential to the use of the books. 4. To bring in as much valuable thought and informa tion as possible, without in any degree sacrificing the utility of the lessons as exercises in reading. 5. To form right habits of thought and expression in reading, and to cultivate a quick and lively imagination. 6.-To give the best models of excellence in composition. As regards the mechanical execution of the Readers the books speak for themselves. Illustrations are given in sufficient abundance to make the pages attractive; and they have been carefully designed and engraved by the best artists so as to aid the eye in interpreting the text. The type used is the clearest and handsomest that could be procured, and special care has been taken to have the books bound in the most substantial and durable manner. In brief, the publishers are confident that the new series of Readers will be found to respond in every respect to the demands of the most critical and exacting of our educators, and they feel assured that it must at once meet with that large sale to which its pre-eminent merits fully entitle it. in its influence because not openly and defiantly vicious, it is really a matter of congratulation that publishers find a public, and a large one, too, for such sweet, wholesome stories as are written by "Lyndon." To the thousands of readers of Margaret, this story, by the same author, needs no introduction save her name. But to others it may be said that the present volume is quite worthy of the fame of its talented author. a quiet, pleasantly told story of American life, dealing with the joys and sorrows of just such people as you are likely to meet on the street this afternoon on your way to the post-office, or who will "drop in" upon you this evening after tea; people not hysterical in their ways, but very lovable withal, and whose stories awaken your interest and command your sympathies.
