FWhat !

S But ah, how far from mortal sight

HYMN LIV.
The Lord of glory dwells!

A Funeral Thought.
A veil of interposing night
His radiant face conceals.

ARK! from the tombs, a mournful sound, 4 O could my longing spirit rise On strong immortal wing,

“ Ye living men, come view the ground, And reach thy palace in the skies,

“ Where you must shortly lie.' My Saviour and my King!

2 “Princes, this clay must be your bed, 5 There thousands worship at thy feet, “In spite of all your towers! And there (divine employ!)

" The tall, the wise, the reverend head The triumphs of thy love repeat,

" Must lie as low as ours." In songs of endless joy.

3 Great God! is this our certain doom? 6 Thy presence beams eternal day

And are we still secure?
O’er all the blissful place;

Still walking downward to the tomb;
Who would not drop this load of clay, And yet prepare no more?
And die to see thy face?

4 Grant us the power of quick’ning grace,

To fit our souls to fly;
HYMN LII.

Then when we drop this dying flesh,
The Excellency and Sufficiency of the Scrip. We'll rise above the sky.

tures. VATHER of mercies! in thy word

HYMN LV. For ever be thy name ador'd

A Charity Hymn. For these celestial lines.

ORD of life, all praise excelling, 2 Here may the wretched sons of want

Exhaustless riches find;
Riches above what earth can grant,

Deign'st to make thy humble dwelling,

With the poor of humble mind. And lasting as the mind. 3 Here the fair tree of knowledge grows,

2 As thy love, through all creation, And yields a free repast,

Beams like thy diffusive light; Sublimer sweets than nature knows

So the scorn'd and humble station Invite the longing taste.

Shrinks before thine equal sight. 4 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice

3 Thus thy care, for all providing,

Warm’d thy faithful prophet's tongue; Spreads heavenly peace around; And life, and everlasting joys

Who, the lot of all deciding, Attend the blissful sound.

To thy chosen Israel sung: 5 O may these heavenly pages be

4 When thine harvest yields thee pleasure, My ever dear delight;

Thou the golden sheaf shalt bind; And still new beauties may I see,

To the poor belongs the treasure And still increasing light.

Of the scatter'd ears behind. 6 Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,

Chorus. Be thou for ever near;

These thy God ordains to bless Teach me to love thy sacred word,

The widow and the fatherless. And view my Saviour there.

5 When thine olive plants increasing, HYMN LIII.

Pour their plenty o’er thy plain, The Seasons crowned with Goodness. Grateful thou shalt take the blessing, Psalm lxv. 11.

But not search the bough again.

Chorus. These, &c.
Well may thy praise our lips employ,
While in thy temple we appear,

6 When thy favour'd vintage flowing,

Gladdens thy autumnal scene, To hail thee, Sovreign of the year. Own the bountcous hand bestowing, 2 Wide as the wheels of nature roll,

But thy vines the poor shall glean.
Thy hand supports and guides the whole;
The sun is taught by thee to rise,

Chorus. These, &c.
And darkness when to veil the skies.

17 Still we read thy word declaring 3 The flow'ry spring, at thy command, Perfumes the air, and paints the land;

Mercy, Lord, thine own decree; The summer rays with rigour shine

Mercy every sorrow sharing To raise the corn and cheer the vine.

-Warms the heart resembling thee.

8 Still the orphan and the stranger, 4 Thy hand in autumn richly pours

Still the widow owns thy care, Through all our coast redundant stores;

Screen'd by thee in every danger, And winters, soften'd by thy care,

Heard by thee in every prayer. No more the face of horror wear. 5 Seasons, and months, and weeks, and days

Hallelujah. Amen. Demand successive songs of praise;

HYMN LVI.
And be the grateful homage paid,
With morning light and evening shade.
6 Here in thy house let incense rise,

At the Ordination or Institution of a

Minister.
And circling sabbaths bless our eyes,
Till to those lofty heights we soar,
Where days and years revolve no more.

We pay our homage and our vows;

[ocr errors]

Whilst with a grateful heart we share

HYMN LVII. These pledges of our Saviour's care.

Prayer for Ministers. 2 The Saviour, when to heaven he rose, ATHER of mercies! bow thine car, In splendid triumph o'er his foes, Scatter'd bis gifts on men below,

We plead for those who plead for thee, And wide his royal bounties flow.

Successful pleaders may they be! 3 Hence sprang th' Apostle's honour'd name, 2 How great their work, how vast their charge! Sacred beyond heroic fame;

Do thou their anxious souls enlarge ; Hence dictates the prophetic sage,

Their best acquirements are our gain, And hence the evangelic page.

We share the blessings they obtain. 4 In lower forms to bless our eyes,

3 Clothe, then, with energy divine Pastors from hence and Teachers rise; Their words, and let those words be thine; Who, though with feebler rays they shine, To them thy sacred truth reveal, Still mark a long extended line.

Suppress their fear, inflame their zeal. 5 From Christ their varied gifts derive, 4 Teach them to sow the precious seed, And, fed by him, their graces live;

Tench them thy chosen flock to feed; Whilst guarded by his potent hand,

Teach them immortal souls to gain! Amidst the rage of hell they stand.

Souls that will well reward their pair 6 So shall the bright succession run,

5 Let thronging multitudes around, Through all the courses of the sun;

Hear from their lips the joyful sound; Whilst unborn churches, by their care, In humble strains thy grace implore, Shall rise and flourish large and fair.

And feel thy new-ereating power. 7 Jesus, our Lord, their hearts shall know 6 Let sinners break their massy chains, The spring whence all these blessings flow; Distressed souls forget their pains ; Pastors and people shout his praise,

Let light through distant realms be spread, 'Through the long round of endless days. And Zion rear her drooping head. I Whenever the Hymns are used at the celebration of divine service, a certain portion or

portions of the Psalms of David in metre shall also be suarg.
