GREAT and glorious God, who dwellest in the high and holy place, and yet lookest down with mercy on us, Thy weak and sinful children on earth; be pleased, we beseech Thee, favourably to receive our evening sacrifice of prayer and praise. We thank Thee heartily for the mercies of this day. O Lord, we do not deserve any blessing at Thy hands. With shame and sorrow we confess that much of our life has been wasted in self-pleasing and sin. Thy love has been unthankfully forgotten. Our own solemn promises have been often broken. Thy holy word has been sadly neglected. Thou hast done great things for us, and we have been too often careless about pleasing Thee. For all our many transgressions and shortcomings we would humble ourselves before Thee. Lord, we are vile and sinful, have mercy upon us for Jesus' sake. And do Thou, O Lord, whose name is Holy, make us holy. This is Thy will, even our sanctification. Fulfil in us all the good pleasure of Thy will. Make clean our hearts within us. Purge our consciences from dead works, that we may serve Thee the living God. Make us to love Thy holy word more, and understand it better. And may the reading of that word, and all the means of grace provided for us, be effectual for our edification and our instruction in righteousness.
