XVII SERMONS ON GENERAL SUBJECTS & ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS, PREACHED IN THE Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Exeter, BY GEORGE HENRY SHIELD, M.A., Rector of Holy Trinity, and Hon. Chaplain to the LONDON: HAMILTON, ADAMS, & Co., PATERNOSTER ROW. WILLIAM CLIFFORD, EXETER. 1864. 100. s. 31. PREFACE. The Sermons, contained in this Volume, were preached at the 'Special Services' of the Exeter Volunteers in the Parish Church of Holy Trinity, and appear in their present form in compliance with the wishes of many of those who were present at their delivery. No pretension is attached to them by the Author beyond that of being plain, sincere, and Scriptural WORDS IN SEASON spoken in the Sanctuary, with reference to passing events and in the inculcation of Christian duties. In venturing to submit them to public notice, the Author is influenced by a willingness to acquiesce in the desire of many of his hearers to possess in such a publication the record of certain occasions, on which they united in special worship, and also by the hope that others may possibly find in its pages that which is good to the use of edifying." The subjects selected are, with one or two exceptions, of a general nature, and, in view of their importance, the Preacher can only pray God of His goodness to impart power to his words in enunciating Scriptural Truth, and to supply whatever may be wanting in the advocacy of Christian precepts through the imperfect, however well intentioned, reasoning of a fallible "Minister of Jesus Christ."
