JOHN VII.

me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. But I know him; for I am from 30 him, and he hath sent me. Then they sought to take him: but no man 31 laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

12

The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. 33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go 34 unto him that sent me. Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and 36 where I am, thither ye cannot come. Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the 36 dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come ? In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come 88 unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.a But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive; for the Holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified.

89

40

Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a 41 truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, 42 Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, 43 where David was ? b So there was a division among the people because of 44 him. And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

45

Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said 46 unto them, Why have ye not brought him? The officers answered, Never 47 man spake like this man. Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye 48 also deceived? Have any of the rulers, or of the Pharisees believed on 49 50 him? But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 61 Doth our law judge any man before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

63 VIII.1

And every man went unto his own house. But Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

§ 84. The Woman taken in Adultery.-JERUSALEM.

JOHN VIII. 2—11.

2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the 3 people came unto him; and he sat down and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery: and ✦ when they had set her in the midst,' they say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down,

and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And 9 again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last and Jesus was left alone, and the 10 woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thing 11 accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

JOHN VIII. 12-59.

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of 13 lift. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thy14 self; thy record is not true. Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. 15 16 Ye judge after the flesh, I judge no man. And yet if I judge, my judg17 ment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. 18 also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.

It is

I am

one that beareth witness of myself; and the Father that sent me, beareth 19 witness of me. 'Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye 20 should have known my Father also. These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, for his hour was not yet come.

21

24

Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, 22 and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot 23 come. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall 26 die in your sins. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say, and to judge of you: but he that sent me, is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. 728 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father. Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father 29 hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please 90 him. As he spake these words, many believed on him.

81

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in 82 my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; ' and ye shall know the truth, 83 and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Y

84 shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, 35 Whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever, but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore 37 shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father; and ye do that 39 which ye have seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's 40 children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did 41 not Abraham. Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, 42 We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said

unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded 43 forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do: he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth; because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: 45 for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye 46 believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the

47 truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God, heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

48

Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou 49 art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil; 50 but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

own glory there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

And I seek not mine

Verily, verily, I say 52 unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is 54 dead and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that 65 honoureth me, of whom ye say, that he is your God. Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall 56 be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father 57 Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen 58 Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

§ 86. A Lawyer instructed. Love to our neighbour defined. Parable of the good Samaritan.-NEAR JERUSALEM.

25

LUKE X. 25-37.

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, 20 what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written 97 in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy

But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neigh80 bour? And Jesus answering, said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, 31 and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way; and when he saw him, he 32 passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought 35 him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him: and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was 37 neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou like

§ 87. Jesus in the house of Martha and Mary.—BETHANY.

LUKE X. 38-42.

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: 30 and a certain woman, named Martha, received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his 40 word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve 41 alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered, and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and troubled about many things; 42 but one thing is needful; and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

§ 88. The Disciples again taught how to pray.-NEAR JERUSALEM.

LUKE XI. 1—13.

1 And it came to pass, that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. 3 Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from vil. And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go • unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves: 'for a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given

If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he 2 for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

§ 89. The Seventy return.-JERUSALEM ?
LUKE X. 17-24.

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils 18 are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld 19 Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and 20 nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding, in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

21

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes; even so, Father; for so 22 it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

23

94

And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

§ 90. A man born blind is healed on the Sabbath. Our Lord's subsequent discourses.-JERUSALEM.

1

JOHN IX. 1-41. X. 1–21.

And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man o nis 8 parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day: 5 the night cometh when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind 7 man with the clay,' and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is by interpretation, Sent. He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

9

The neighbours, therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said, This is 10 he others said, He is like him but he said, I am he. Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus, made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash and I went and washed, and I
