pray thee, between me and thee, and
between my herdmen and thy herdmen;
for we be brethren. 9 Is not the whole
land before thee? separate thyself, I pray
thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left
hand, then I will go to the right; or if
thou depart to the right hand, then I will
go to the left.
10 And Lot lifted up his
eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan,
that it was well watered every where,
before the LORD destroyed Sodom and
Gomorrah, even as the garden of the
LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou
comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose
him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot
journeyed east: and they separated them.
selves the one from the other. 12 Abram
dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot
dwelled in the cities of the plain, and
pitched his tent toward Sodom. 13 But
the men of Sodom were wicked and sin-
ners before the LORD exceedingly. 14 And
the LORD said unto Abram, after that
Lot was separated from him, Lift up now
thine eyes, and look from the place where
thou art northward, and southward, and
eastward, and westward: 15 for all the
land which thou seest, to thee will I give
it, and to thy seed for ever. 16 And I
will make thy seed as the dust of the
earth: so that if a man can number the
dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also
be numbered. 17 Arise, walk through
the land in the length of it and in the
breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
18 Then Abram removed his tent, and
came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre,
which is in Hebron, and built there an
altar unto the LORD.

Ash Wednesday.
MORNING. Psalm VI.

I O LORD, rebuke me not in thine indignation: neither chasten me in thy displeasure.

2 Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak: O Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed.

3 My soul also is sore troubled : but, Lord, how long wilt thou punish me? 4 Turn thee, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for thy mercy's sake. 5 For in death no man remembereth thee and who will give thee thanks in the pit?

6 I am weary of my groaning; every night wash I my bed: and water my couch with my tears.

7 My beauty is gone for very trouble : and worn away because of all mine enemies.

8 Away from me, all ye that work va nity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.

9 The Lord hath heard my petition: the Lord will receive my prayer.

10 All mine enemies shall be confounded, and sore vexed: they shall be turned back, and put to shame suddenly. Psalm XXXII.

I BLESSED is he whose unrighteousness is forgiven: and whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth no sin and in whose spirit there is no guile.

3 For while I held my tongue : my bones consumed away through my daily complaining.

4 For thy hand is heavy upon me day and night and my moisture is like the drought in summer.

5 I will acknowledge my sin unto thee: and mine unrighteousness have I not hid. 6 I said, I will confess my sins unto the Lord : and so thou forgavest the wickedness of my sin.

7 For this shall every one that is godly make his prayer unto thee, in a time when thou mayest be found but in the great water-floods they shall not come nigh him.

8 Thou art a place to hide me in, thou shalt preserve me from trouble: thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.

9 I will inform thee, and teach thee in the way wherein thou shalt go and I will guide thee with mine eye.

10 Be ye not like to horse and mule, which have no understanding: whose mouths must be held with bit and bridle, lest they fall upon thee.

II Great plagues remain for the ungodly but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, mercy embraceth him on every side.

Psalm XXXVIII.

I PUT me not to rebuke, O Lord, in thine anger neither chasten me in thy heavy displeasure.

2 For thine arrows stick fast in me : and thy hand presseth me sore.

3 There is no health in my flesh, because of thy displeasure neither is there any rest in my bones, by reason of my sin.

4 For my wickednesses are gone over my head and are like a sore burden, too heavy for me to bear.

5 My wounds stink, and are corrupt: through my foolishness.

6 I am brought into so great trouble and misery that I go mourning all the day long.

7 For my loins are filled with a sore disease and there is no whole part in my body.

8 I am feeble, and sore smitten: I have roared for the very disquietness of my heart.

19 But mine enemies live, and are mighty and they that hate me wrong. fully are many in number.

20 They also that reward evil for good are against me because I follow the thing that good is.

21 Forsake me not, O Lord my God: be not thou far from me.

22 Haste thee to help me : O Lord God of my salvation.

First Lesson. Isaiah LVIII. I. 58 CRY aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. 3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your la bours. 4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. 5Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? 7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hear-hungry, and that thou bring the poor

9 Lord, thou knowest all my desire : and my groaning is not hid from thee. 10 My heart panteth, my strength hath failed me and the sight of mine eyes is gone from me.

II My lovers and my neighbours did stand looking upon my trouble and my kinsmen stood afar off.

:

12 They also that sought after my life laid snares for me and they that went about to do me evil talked of wickedness, and imagined deceit all the day long.

13 As for me, I was like a deaf man, and heard not and as one that is dumb, who doth not open his mouth.

:

14 I became even as a man that eth not and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

15 For in thee, O Lord, have I put my trust thou shalt answer for me, O Lord my God.

16 I have required that they, even mine enemies, should not triumph over me for when my foot slipped, they rejoiced greatly against me.

that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. 9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking va

nity; and if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: and the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. 12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

Second Lesson. Mark II. 13.

2 13 AND he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphæus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. 15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. 16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? 17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? 19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. 21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. 22 And no man puttet new wine into old bottles: else the

7 I have watched, and am even as it were a sparrow: that sitteth alone upon the house-top.

8 Mine enemies revile me all the day long and they that are mad upon me are sworn together against me.

9 For I have eaten ashes as it were bread and mingled my drink with weeping;

10 And that because of thine indignation and wrath : for thou hast taken me up, and cast me down.

II My days are gone like a shadow : and I am withered like grass.

12 But, thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever and thy remembrance throughout all generations.

13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Sion: for it is time that thou have mercy upon her, yea, the time is come. 14 And why? thy servants think upon her stones: and it pitieth them to see her in the dust.

15 The heathen shall fear thy Name, O Lord: and all the kings of the earth thy Majesty;

16 When the Lord shall build up Sion: and when his glory shall appear; 17 When he turneth him unto the prayer of the poor destitute: and despiseth not their desire.

19 For he hath looked down from his sanctuary: out of the heaven did the Lord behold the earth;

20 That he might hear the mournings of such as are in captivity: and deliver the children appointed unto death; 21 That they may declare the Name of the Lord in Sion: and his worship at Jerusalem;

22 When the people are gathered together and the kingdoms also, to serve the Lord.

23 He brought down my strength in my journey and shortened my days. 24 But I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of mine age as for thy years, they endure throughout all generations.

25 Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

First Lesson. Jonah III. I.

3 AND the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. 3So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an ex

city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13 and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; 16lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

First Sunday in Lent.

MORNING. Genesis XIX. 12.

19 12AND the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 13 for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. 14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mock

12 3 FOR Consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: "for whom the Lord loved unto his sons in law. 15 And when eth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. 16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. 18 And Lot said unto them,
