this, and other similar appearances recorded throughout Holy Writ; with that of Him who in the Revelation of St. John, called himself “the First and the Last :” we plainly discover one Person of the Godhead, and that Person to be Jesus of Nazareth.

Let us turn to that prophecy of the final events in the Church of Christ; and in the first chapter we find the Evangelist plainly recording the appearance, and the glorious words of our great Redeemer. Who came to his beloved Disciple, under the same form of immortal majesty sixty years after his Crucifixion, and Resurrection; in which he had visited his faithful and beloved Daniel, six hundred

years

before his Incarnation. “I saw one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.”

6 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the First and the Last;

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold I am alive for evermore. Amen : and have the keys of Hell, and of Death. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter.”

Again, Daniel writes thus in his seventh chapter, confirming the eternal existence of God in three Persons. “I saw in the night visions; and behold one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom ; that all people, nations, and languages should serve him : his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away ; and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”

Time will not suffice, at present, to confirm all the divine truth of our religious faith from the New Testament; but you, my beloved brethren in Christ Jesus, must have plainly recognised the eternal Son of God in all the passages quoted from the Old.

May the promised illumination of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, be poured out upon your hearts, and understandings; that, through the alone sufficient merits of “ Christ Jesus of Nazareth,” we may together praise the Lord Jehovah here on earth ; also in the realms of the departed souls of just men : and, finally, rejoice together before God's everlasting throne, in the blissful mansions of heaven!

For thus does our Lord Christ conclude his sacred Revelation to the whole race of the sons of Adam : “I, Jesus, have sent mine Angel to testify unto you these things in the Churches. I am the root, and the offspring of David, and the bright, and morning star. And the Spirit and the Bride say, come.

And let him that heareth say,

And let him that is athirst come, And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”

come.

SERMON III.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE OF THE LOGOS.

JUDGES XIII. 22, 23.

AND MANOAH SAID UNTO HIS WIFE, WE SHALL

SURELY DIE, BECAUSE WE HAVE SEEN GOD. BUT HIS WIFE SAID UNTO HIM, IF THE LORD WERE PLEASED TO KILL US, HE WOULD NOT HAVE RECEIVED A BURNT OFFERING, AND A MEAT OFFERING AT OUR HANDS ; NEITHER WOULD HE HAVE SHOWED US ALL THESE THINGS: NOR WOULD HE, AS AT THIS TIME, HAVE TOLD US SUCH THINGS AS THESE.

The most learned Divines of our own, and other, Churches have, with good reason, thought this one of the many appearances of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the old times of the Jews. And if, from the many particular occurrences, it were not clearly evident; his Name, as given by himself, would prove the correctness of their opinion.

It is well known that the translators of our Bible, oftentimes, put other words in the margin, more fully explanatory of the Text. In such cases, a reference to the original language

best decides the sense, and this was made by the learned Bishop Patrick ; who finds the same word translated “ wonderful”. in Isaiah, which here in the Text is “ secret;" each are attributes of God's power. That such close researches are highly useful for the better understanding of Scripture cannot be denied; and in this case they are of peculiar importance.

For if the Son of man did, frequently, appear to his servants in older times of the Jews ; before he became an inhabitant of Judea, born of the Virgin Mary; he must be more than man, and consequently God, and Lord, from the beginning.

Let us consider the sacrifice of Manoah, the future father of Samson, one of the Judges of Israel; and, not confining our proofs of our Saviour's Divinity to this one instance; corroborate our faith by other partsof the immortal book of the Truth of God.

A certain man, named Manoah, had a barren wife; and unto her the Angel of the
