all his ways. While hourly experience confirms his willing obedience, because he finds 66 ways are ways of pleasantness, and

God's

all His paths are peace."

These were the doctrines of our Saviour Jesus Christ; whose entire Ministry was one beautiful illustration of His Gospel. Peace was in all His steps; mercy, charity, and humility were attendant graces on the blessed. Son of God.

So are we taught by "faith, which cometh by hearing" his Evangelists, and Apostles; our hearing is by the word of God. That word contained not alone in the sacred records of the Old Testament; but confirmed, repeated, and fulfilled in the good tidings, the Evangelical History of the New.

Upon both the Christian necessarily builds up his faith; for upon the commandments of the first the religious obligations of the second Covenant depend.

The first Commandment declares the might, and power, of Jehovah.

The second is express against Idolatry; confirming the faith of one, only, true God. In our Redeemer's sublime prayer these

are enforced by the words "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name!" The third commandment He greatly strengthened, when He said, "Swear not at all."

Nor, though upon a particular occasion, He correctly asserted that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath; did He deny the power of that commandment. On the contrary, He was used to minister in the Synagogue upon the Sabbath day.

Even upon the Cross did Jesus ratify the fifth commandment; when tenderly regarding his Mother after the flesh, and kindly addressing his beloved Disciple, he said to them. "Woman, behold thy Son!-then saith he to the Disciple, Behold thy Mother! And from that hour that Disciple took her unto his own home."

The sixth, when Peter smote the High Priest's servant, was as strictly adhered to; our Lord healed the wounded man, and rebuked his rash follower.

The penalty for breaking the seventh was prevented from being put into execution by wicked men, when the penetration

and mercy of the Son of God dispersed the conscience-stricken accusers. Yet was it confirmed by His own words to the woman; "Neither do I condemn thee; go, and sin no more!"

In His fine parable of the unjust Steward, "thou shalt not steal" is indeed wonderfully illustrated. And how carefully did our Lord observe the next Commandment; who " when He was reviled, He reviled not again;" "He opened not his mouth, but was led as a sheep to the slaughter."

So far from coveting, He rejected all the riches of this World; all its pomps and glories; and gave even His own life, for the Salvation of His enemies.

He said, "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil :" and upon our Duty to God, and to our neighbour, which He justly remarked as the sum of all the Commandments; He expressly declared "hang all the Law, and the Prophets."

This then is the summary of the Christian Faith; which is entirely, and exclusively, contained in the Bible, and New Testament. It is in both, and in either: but it depends as much upon the one, as upon the other:

it is not contained, as lately has most falsely been asserted, in the New Testament alone. "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

It is that implicit trust in the veracity of the relator, which causes us to rely upon the accuracy of the information given to us.

Believing therefore that grace, and truth, came by Jesus Christ, we rejoice in His glad tidings of Salvation; and to His sole merits do we ascribe the efficacy of Universal Redemption.

We know that He spoke truly; whether in His beautiful parables, so justly descriptive of human life, in all its multifarious pursuits; or in those representations of the life to be hereafter. Whether He pathetically lamented over the sinful wickedness of mankind ; or, prophetic spirit, called to their view the awful, and impending, vengeance of their God.

All these works of His glorious Ministry are written in the Gospels, commented upon the Epistles, confirmed in the Revelation; in the New Testament of our Lord Jesus Christ. Be that our rule of faith; let that teach us

what to hope for. Let us not neglect the assembling ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but let us continue to meet together in His holy Church, to hear the word of God and receive His holy Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. That so we may encourage each the other, so grow in faith together; one body, members of the Church of Christ. "For faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Now "the Law," that is the Covenant of the Old Testament, came by Moses: a Law of faith by works. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone; "As it is written, Behold I lay in Sion a stumbling stone, and rock of offence; and whosoever believeth in Him shall not be offended."

The Jews, conforming to the mere outward observances of the law, and full of spiritual pride; were easily offended at the humility of their Redeemer's appearance. Their perverted faith required a stronger assurance
