Redeemer, to save all mankind. One Comforter aids, and sanctifies every good work, tending to the glory of Almighty God, our Heavenly Father; and to the everlasting welfare of mankind.

While our holy Church proclaims this saving faith; she calls upon us all to seek for her authority, to find her rule of faith alone in the ever open Book of God. To the Holy Bible she refers our anxious search; for there her Doctrine stands revealed, thence is her pure faith justified.

"But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is the word of faith which we preach: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture saith, whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed.

SERMON XI.

FOR THIRTIETH OF JANUARY.

1 PET. II. 13—15.

SUBMIT YOURSELVES TO EVERY ORDINANCE OF MAN
FOR THE LORD'S SAKE: WHETHER IT BE TO THE
KING AS SUPREME;
UNTO THEM THAT ARE SENT BY HIM FOR THE
PUNISHMENT OF EVIL DOERS, AND FOR THE PRAISE
OF THEM THAT DO WELL. FOR SO IS THE WILL
OF GOD, THAT WITH WELL DOING YE MAY PUT TO
SILENCE THE IGNORANCE OF FOOLISH MEN.

OR UNTO GOVERNORS, AS

THE many uncommon Revolutions in neighbouring Kingdoms of the Earth, during our own lives, have afforded most awful examples of God's vengeance upon those who rebel against the lawfully appointed Governors of their country. For God loveth obedience,

and his only begotten Son rendered tribute to the Ruler of Judea; and lived subject to the laws of the land in which he was born.

Nearly two Centuries have elapsed, since the Martyrdom of the anointed Sovereign of these Dominions; but a portion of the evil spirit of insubordination has again affected our Country. The very selfsame publications, the same "principles, and practices," have been used now; as has been ably shewn by an eminent 'Divine of our Sister Church of Ireland; in hopes of overturning our. glorious, and free, Constitution in Church, and State.

But, by the merciful Providence of Almighty God, our rulers have been active in showing themselves ready "to execute justice, and to maintain truth." And one bold spirit of fervent devotion to the Religion of our Lord Jesus Christ; of loyal attachment to our venerable Monarch; had again elevated our happy Country to a high rank among the Nations of the Earth.

The Rev. A. H. Kenney, D.D. Rector of St. Olave's, Southwark, formerly Dean of Achonry in Ireland.

The very Seasons have conspired to bring the contest at once to a fair issue, whether a mild, and merciful, Code of Laws shall stand; the admiration of the world; or a crude, and novel, Reform shall destroy the noblest work of human intellect; the united fabric of many Ages; the British Constitution.

Retrace, for a few short months, the daily records of our Land: behold anarchy, rebellion, and all the promised blessings of a Revolution. But where are those Reformers now, when a severe Winter calls upon every man to help his neighbour? Are they dispensing Charity; are they found at the sick man's pillow; at once, telling him to confide in God, and bestowing on him the overflowings of God's bounteous mercy?

Oh no, my brethren ; peace, and goodwill," suit not their crafty plans: Religion supports the that be," for the powers powers that be are ordained of God." No, indeed; they pour forth the wretched effusions of Infidelity; far from wishing to benefit their Country's cause, they sow sedition, blasphemy, hatred, enmity, and death !

While, on the other side, throughout the

whole Kingdom, Princes and Nobles; Bishops, and Magistrates; the rich; the honest tradesman; the man hardly able to maintain his own family all, all are actively united in feeding, clothing, and supporting, their poorer brethren.

Blessed be the Lord God of Hosts, to whom our mingled praises rise, an offering to Himself, the God of Love, and mercy! To Thee, O Jesus Christ! our glad thanksgivings rise; for with one voice the rich, and poor, confess Thy saving health!

Led by these noble proofs of real benevolence, to consider how justly, how necessarily God has ordained some to have wealth, some to be poor; may peace, and quiet, reign throughout our Country. And when the present generations are called away to enjoy the eternal reward of mercy in a better world than this; then may our children's children emulate their fathers' charity; then may the Crown flourish, and the British Constitution. still exist inviolate!

In those mournful days, which caused the Fathers of our Reformation to frame the service of this day; every man's hand was lifted against his neighbour throughout the
