dained servant of One only God, Eternal in Trinity, and Unity; I cannot but remind the Congregation entrusted to my care ', of the dangerous concession to weak Christians : of which the Emissary of the Prince of Darkness so justly accused this great, and enlightened Christian Country : when the Statute forbidding public writings against the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity was repealed ; and gave rise to greater blasphemies.

Pity, and humane feelings, overcame strict duty, when that relief was granted; and behold its fruits !-Let every man worship God according to his conscience; but let true Religion be upheld inviolate.

Not that Truth will not shine the more in darkness; and, like our Sun of Righteousness, break forth with healing in its wings. But that Christians should act consistently with their belief; and, when once they have “ set their affections on things on high ;' no earthly motives make them forsake the “ God who

O thou, the Author of mercy, who knowest all our infirmities; send down thy Holy Spirit from above; where thou reignest, O Christ; ever one God, with the Father, and the Holy Ghost. Protect thy faithful Church ; and lead into the pale of thy flock all mankind, all as our fellow Christians. And, O Lord ! inspire us with the spirit, thy benevolent spirit, of peace, unity, and concord!

In the continuation of the 89th Psalm, David sets forth the promises of God, and also his warnings to the disobedient. As a whole poem, this Psalm is peculiarly sublime and beautiful; and those who read it with attention will find many more excellences than these two discourses have pointed out to observation.

Once again, let me recommend the study of divine poetry as not only a praiseworthy, but a delightful occupation. While it enlarges the mind, it imperceptibly amends the heart; and it begets an unerring confidence in God, through all the vicissitudes of human life.

SERMON VI.

THE MESSIAH PROMISED TO ABRAHAM.

GENESIS XXII. 18.

AND IN THY SEED SHALL ALL THE NATIONS OF THE

EARTH BE BLESSED.

God Almighty renewed this promise to Abraham, after he had prepared to offer up his only son Isaac, as a sacrifice according to his commandment. A son given to Abraham, after he had relinquished according to the course of nature all hopes of children and a son in whom the promise made before to Abraham was to be realized.

But he, knowing the truth, power, and mercy of God, did not hesitate to

obey his word; and, whether he thought that He would give him another son; or that Infinite Wisdom had decreed that the promise should be recalled; he cheerfully prepared to resign his present exalted hopes.

But the Angel of the Lord, at the very moment that his hand was lifted to slay his son; called to him from heaven, and forbad that sacrifice. And Abraham, beholding a ram caught by the horns in a thicket; offered it up; a grateful sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the Lord Jehovah, “whose mercy endureth for ever.

“ And the Angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time; and said; by myself have I sworn, saith the Lord; for because thou hast done this thing; and hast not withheld thy son, thine only

That in blessing, I will bless thee; and in multiplying, I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven; and as the sand which is upon the sea shore: and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies. And in thy seed shall all the Nations of the Earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice.”

To Isaac himself God renewed this promise, after his marriage with Rebekah ; and continued it to his second son Jacob. For
