THE SYROPHENICIAN WOMAN.

Who asked a favor of Christ near the border of Tyre and Sidon?

Ans. A woman that was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation. MARK vii. 26.

What favor did she ask?

Ans. She besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

What reply did Jesus make?

MARK vii.

Ans. Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled; for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. MARK vii. 27.

What answer did the woman make?

Ans. She answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord; yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. MARK vii. 28.

Why did Christ speak of the woman as a dog, and the woman speak of herself as a dog? Ans. Because the Jews called the heathen, "Gentile dogs."

What did Jesus say to this appeal from her?

Ans. He said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. MARK Vii. 29.

THE LEAVEN.

To what does Christ liken the kingdom of God?

Ans. It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal.

How long did the leaven remain in the meal? Ans. Till the whole was leavened. LUKE xiii. 21.

What is signified by this parable?

Ans. A final complete triumph of Chris tianity. That it will diffuse itself through ak nations, and purify and ennoble all life.

LESSON X.

THE MARRIAGE OF THE KING'S SON.

Were all men at first invited to the marriage of the king's son?

Ans. He sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding. MATT. xxii. 3.

How did those who were first invited conduct themselves?

Ans. They made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. MATT. xxii. 5, 6.

Whom did the king then invite ?

Ans. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good; and the wedding was furnished with guests. MATT. xxii. 9, 10.

THE LABORERS IN THE VINEYARD.

What did the householder do?

Ans. A householder went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard. MATT. XX. 1.

What wages did he agree to pay the laborers?

Ans. He agreed with the laborers for a penny a day. Matt. xx. 2.

Did he go out at other times in the day to hire laborers?

Ans. He went out at the third, the sixth, the ninth, and the eleventh hours.

What time of the day was the eleventh hour?

Ans. Five o'clock in the afternoon.
