MAKE us, O Lord, day by day wiser

and holier. Comfort us in tribula

tion, and arm us against every temptation, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

BLESS, O Lord, we beseech Thee, Thy

Universal Church. Send peace and prosperity to Thy spiritual Israel. Let Thy Word have free course and be glorified. May the people who sit in darkness see a great light, and to them who sit in the region and shadow of death let light spring up. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, may spiritual sacrifices and the incense of pure hearts be offered to Thy Name, O Lord our Redeemer, Who ever livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

HASTEN, O Lord, the time when the

mystery of iniquity shall cease to work. Bring Thou to nought every design, and subdue Thou every power which opposeth and exalteth itself against Thy Throne. Have pity on those who wander in error. Let them receive the truth in the love of it. Guide them by Thy grace unto Thyself, and keep them in safety there. Grant that, at the last, they may be found among those whose names written in the Book of Life, to Thy glory, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

E bless Thee, O Lord, that Thou hast

WE given unto us a fruitful land and

peaceful dwelling places; but we mourn b

cause of our national sins, and we beseech Thee not to be a stranger in the land, but be Thou always in the midst of us; and although our iniquities might turn Thee away, yet do Thou abide with us for Thy Name's sake and save us. Grant that the righteousness which exalteth a nation may abound in our land, and that the sins which are a reproach to our people may disappear. Make us a holy people unto Thyself, and establish Thy throne among us from generation to generation. Amen.

GOD, from whom all holy desires, all

good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto Thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey Thy commandments, and also that by Thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

L IGHTEN our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord; and by Thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of the coming night; for the love of Thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Hymn, at the discretion of the Minister, may now be sung, and then any of the following prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings may be read.

[ocr errors]

LORD our heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of kings, Lord of

lords, the only Ruler of princes, Who dost from Thy throne behold all the dwellers upon earth: most heartily we beseech Thee with Thy favour to behold our Sovereign Lady, Queen VICTORIA, Albert Edward Prince of Wales, the Princess of Wales, and all the Royal Family: Endue them with Thy Holy Spirit; enrich them with Thy heavenly grace; prosper them with all happiness; and bring them to Thine everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

EXTEND Thy lovingkindness, O Lord, to

the ministers of Thy Church; to those who aid them in their spiritual labours; and especially to Thy servants to whom is committed the oversight of this flock. Fortify them all with Thy Spirit, that they may faithfully accomplish the duties of their ministry, and labour with success in the salvation of sinners and the edification of Thy saints, for the sake of the Great Shepherd and Bishop of souls, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

O ETERNAL God, Thou God of all

power, wisdom, and goodness, by Whom kings reign, legislators deliberate, and magistrates rule, we humbly pray Thee to inspire and direct the legislature and the magistracy of these realms, the governors of India, and of the colonies, and all who are in authority at home and abroad, that all their consultations and proceedings may tend to the increase of Thy

Church and the well-being of the nation; for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Minister. Let us give thanks to the Lord.

Minister and People:

ALMIGHTY God and Heavenly Father,

we offer unto Thee through Jesus Christ our evening sacrifice of praise, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to Thy Name. We remember Thy loving-kindness in the manifold gifts Thou hast vouchsafed to us; and Thy goodness toward us, declared in the multitude of Thy mercies which endure for ever. O Lord, how gracious art Thou! In Thee we live and move, and have our being, and Thou dost watch over us in Thy providence. Thou girdest us with strength and crownest us with benefits. But yet more, O Lord, Thou hast filled us with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus, revealing Thy wisdom in Him, by Whom Thou hast been pleased to save mankind; not by works of righteousness which they have done, but according to Thy mercy, and hast chosen us that we should be holy and without blame before Thee in love, making these our bodies Thy temple, and the dwellingplace of Thy Holy Spirit.

For these inestimable benefits of Thy providence and of Thy grace, we render unto Thee our humble and hearty thanks, evermore blessing and praising Thee, world without end. Amen.

A PRAYER OF CHRYSOSTOM.

ALMIGHTY God, Who hast given us

grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto Thee; and dost promise, that when two or three are gathered together in Thy Name Thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of Thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

THE

THE God of all grace, Who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, make us perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle us. To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
