RECOMMENDATIONS.

From the Preceptors of the Publick Schools in Providence.

PROVIDENCE, January 24th, 1814.

WE, the subscribers, having examined Mr. BLAKE'S "Text-Book in Geography and Chronology, with Historical Sketches," do readily concur in giv ing it our decided approbation. The unity of design and the simplification of the different parts, render it, in our opinion, better adapted to the improve ment of youth, in this important part of education, than the geographical works now in use.

GIDEON W. OLNEY.

From the Rev. Thomas Williams, Pastor of the third Congregational Church, in Providence.

PROVIDENCE, July 12th, 1814. SIR-Geography is in itself so pleasing and useful a study, and so connected with other branches of science, that whatever is designed and calculated to diffuse geographical information, deserves grateful commendation. Yet, so many minor volumes on geography have recently been published in New-England, I regretted your proposal of adding one to the number. But I can as sure you, without any flattery, that on examining your treatise, I am highly gratified with its method and design. In my opinion, it is well suited, to af ford peculiar assistance to the Instructor, and to excite and maintain the attention of the student. I have seen, on the subject, no publication which, I think, can have higher claims upon public patronage, than your volume. And as you have already tried, with success, this method of teaching geography in the Academy under your instruction, you may venture, with a good degree of confidence, to offer to other teachers and their pupils the fruits of your own application and experience.

Mr. J. L. BLAKE.

THOMAS WILLIAMS,

From the Rev. James Wilson, Pastor of the second Congregational church in Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R. I. July 14, 1814. · NOTWITHSTANDING the respective merits of a variety of compendiums of geography, for the use of schools which have come under my observa tion, and more especially during several years tuition in one of the publick schools in this town; I am, by a sense of duty, compelled to give a decided preference to a geographical work, by Mr. J. L. BLAKE, as being more in mediately adapted to aid instructors in teaching, and pupils in learning and readily acquiring this important branch of scientifick knowledge.

JAMES WILSON. From Moses Noyes, A. M. Preceptor of the Young Ladies Academy, Providence, P. 1.

PROVIDENCE, July 14th, 1814, HAVING examined" a Text-book in Geography and Chronology, with Historical Sketches," by Mr. JOHN L. BLAKE, I give it as my opinion, that it is the best calculated for schools and academies, of any thing of the kind I have seen, and do, therefore, recommend it to all concerned in the education of youth.

MOSES NOYES.
