PSALM 19. c. M.

The heavens declaring the glory of God.

1 The heavens declare thy glory, Lord,
Which that alone can fill;
The firmament and stars express
Their great Creator's skill.

2 The dawn of each returning day

Fresh beams of knowledge brings; And from the dark returns of night Divine instruction springs.

3 Their powerful language to no realm Or region is confined:

'Tis nature's voice, and understood
Alike by all mankind.

4 Their doctrine does its sacred sense
Through earth's extent display;
Whose bright contents the circling sun
Does round the world convey.

PSALM 19. (SECOND VERSION.) L. M.

For deliverance from sin and death.

1 BEST Instructor, from thy ways
Who can tell how oft he strays?
Save from error's growth our mind,
Leave not, Lord, one root behind.
2 Cleanse us from the guilt that lies
Wrapt within our heart's disguise;
Let us thence, by Thee renewed,
Each presumptuous sin exclude.

3 Let our tongue, from falsehood free, Speak the words approved by Thee: To thine all-observing eyes

Let our thoughts accepted rise.

4 While we thus thy name adore,
And thy healing grace implore,
Blest Redeemer! bow thine ear;
God our strength! propitious hear,

PSALM 19. (THIRD VERSION.) D. L. M.
The heavens declare the glory of God.

1 THE spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim.

Th' unwearied sun from day to day
Doth his Creator's power display,
And publishes to every land
The work of an Almighty Hand.

2 Soon as the evening shades prevail
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly to the listening earth
Repeats the story of her birth;

*

Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.

C

3 What though in solemn silence all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball;
What though no real voice or sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found;
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice;
For ever singing, as they shine,
"The hand that made us is Divine!"

PSALM 23. C. M.

The Lord the Shepherd of his people.

1 THE Lord himself, the mighty Lord,
Vouchsafes to be my guide;

The Shepherd by whose constant care
My wants are all supplied.

2 He does my wandering soul reclaim,
And, to his endless praise,
Instruct with humble zeal to walk
In his most righteous ways.

3 When through the vale of death I
My soul shall fear no ill:

His rod and staff shall comfort me,
And He is with me still.

pass,

4 Since God does thus his wondrous love, Through all my life extend;

That life to him I will devote,
And in his temple spend.

PSALM 23. (SECOND VERSION.) P. M. Christ the good Shepherd,

1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care:
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noon-day walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.
2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountains pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads,
My weary wandering steps he leads,
Where peaceful rivers soft, and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.
3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My stedfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still;
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.
PSALM 24. c. M.

The ascension of Christ into Heaven.

1 LIFT up your heads, eternal gates!

Unfold to entertain

The King of Glory: See! He comes
With his celestial train.

2 Who is the King of Glory? Who?
The Lord for strength renown'd:
In battle mighty: o'er his foes
Eternal victor crowned.

3 Lift up your heads, eternal gates!
Unfold to entertain

The King of Glory: Lo! He comes
With all his shining train.

4 Who is the King of Glory? Who?
The Lord of Hosts renowned;
The ascending Saviour! He is King
Who is with glory crowned.

PSALM 25. s. M.

God's tender mercies, a ground of confidence.

1 MINE eyes and my desire
Are ever to the Lord;
I love to plead his promises,
And rest upon his word.

2 Turn, turn Thee to my soul,
Bring thy salvation near;
When will thy hand release my feet
Out of the deadly snare ?

3 When shall the sovereign grace
Of my forgiving God,

Restore me from those dangerous ways
My wandering feet have trod?

4 O keep my soul from death,
Nor put my hope to shame ;
For I have placed my only trust
In my Redeemer's name.
